Despite the fact that Savage Opress died in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Witwer also portrayed him in the story. Savage Opress was introduced as a powerful, Force-sensitive warrior from Dathomir and Maul’s older brother. He became even stronger after Mother Talzin used dark magic to enhance his abilities. Sadly, Opress was ultimately killed by Emperor Palpatine, with Maul watching helplessly as his brother died.
With the upcoming release of Maul: Shadow Lord on Disney+ later this year, Sam Witwer shared with Star Wars Insider (via Star Wars Holocron) that Savage Opress will continue to be important in the 2026 Clone Wars spinoff. Witwer explained that, at this point in the timeline, Maul is still focused on his brother as he explores his own identity.
He’s on a journey of self-discovery while also reflecting on his relationship with his brother, Savage Opress, who was his first apprentice and a close family member.

Sam Witwer, who plays Maul, has said that Maul felt he let his brother down, so it would make sense for Savage to appear in flashbacks or Force visions. As a huge Star Wars fan, I always felt that Savage Opress’s death in The Clone Wars was a real turning point for Maul. It wasn’t just about Maul’s anger at Palpatine anymore; it massively deepened his hatred. It made his whole quest for revenge feel so much more personal – he wasn’t just fighting for himself, but to honor his brother’s memory too. It added a whole new layer of tragedy and motivation to Maul’s story.
The pain Maul feels from losing his brother, Savage, might actually help him make better, more strategic choices in the future, rather than acting on impulse.
With Maul taking on a new apprentice, Rook Vast (voiced by Vanessa Marshall, who also voices Hera Syndulla), the series opens a path for Maul to find redemption. He might achieve this by prioritizing Rook’s safety, even at great personal cost.
