Darth Maul Is Back in New Trailer for Lucasfilm’s Shadow Lord Show

A new trailer for Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord has been released.

At the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo in April 2025, Lucasfilm revealed they were creating an animated series centered around Darth Maul, the memorable villain created by George Lucas and featured in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Dave Filoni created the show, and it takes place after the events of The Clone Wars. Sam Witwer will reprise his role as the voice of a character.

What happens in the Maul Shadow Lord trailer?

Okay, so the new Maul trailer? It looks like he’s trying to get his criminal empire back up and running while the Empire is taking over the galaxy. And it’s not just about power – he’s also taking on a new apprentice, which is pretty interesting. It seems like we’ll see how he navigates things under the Empire’s rule and builds up a new crew.

I’m a big fan, and I was really excited to hear from Lucasfilm’s Athena Portillo about the show. She shared that Sam Witwer has been amazing throughout the whole process. Apparently, they really value his input on the scripts, which makes sense since he and Dave Filoni originally created the character for animation! It’s great they’re letting him help shape the character’s depth and story.

I was so excited to hear Witwer talk about where things pick up with Maul! Apparently, the story finds him recovering after Ahsoka defeated him – he’s basically getting back on his feet after she totally took him down.

He explained that we discover new aspects of this character. He possesses surprising qualities that, when you consider his past experiences, actually feel very natural.

Matt Michnovetz is the head writer, and Brad Rau is the supervising director, both also serving as executive producers with Dave Filoni and Athena Portillo.

Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
