In my humble opinion as a film critic, the upcoming Star Wars animated series, titled “Maul – Shadow Lord,” promises to delve into the enigmatic life of the former Sith apprentice during a less-explored phase. While we’ve witnessed Maul’s survival after Order 66 and his reign in the Imperial Era as the head of Crimson Dawn, this series will shed light on the intriguing tale of how he abandoned the ways of the Sith and constructed a new criminal empire post the demise of his Shadow Collective/Death Watch syndicates. This untold chapter of Maul’s life is finally set to unfold, offering fans an exciting glimpse into the darker corners of the Star Wars universe.
Today, Star Wars is stirring up excitement for San Diego Comic-Con ahead of time by sharing an exclusive sneak peek image of Maul from the upcoming animated series “Shadow Lord”. Check out the photo below, where you’ll notice that the character appears more intimidating than ever in his new portrayal.
Actor Sam Witwer will continue voicing the character Maul, whom he’s given life to since the Clone Wars series resurrected the character from the dead in the late 2000s. As per Witwer, Shadow Lord is a tale of antagonists pitted against even more formidable adversaries. Unlike other portrayals, Maul won’t be depicted as a cuddly bear; instead, he’ll showcase flaws and hints of humanity due to his past experiences. The question remains: is he as evil as Sidious or Vader? Not quite, but he does have certain imperfections from the Sith perspective.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is being developed for release on Disney+ in 2026.
