**Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 episode 1.**
At last, the third season of Daryl Dixon has begun (for American audiences), welcoming Stephen Merchant, a renowned comedian from Britain, to the cast of The Walking Dead’s spin-off series.
Since being chosen for the series, spectators have been eagerly anticipating which part the renowned author and humorist would assume in the offshoot, featuring Norman Reedus portraying Daryl and Melissa McBride playing Carol.
Now, his character has finally been unveiled.
In the beginning of season 3, Daryl and Carol find themselves in Britain. At this point, Merchant enters the story as Julian, a character portrayed as the last remaining Englishman amidst the devastated London landscape. Surrounded by death and the transformation of people into walkers, he is often referred to as ‘squids’ within the series.
Importantly, he possesses a boat – up until now, he’s been too timid to navigate it. Couldn’t there be a more effective method for Daryl and Carol to return to the United States than to voyage by sea? After all, nothing could possibly go amiss, right?
As a dedicated cinephile, I find myself in a situation where a duo feigns being sailors to persuade Julian into lending his boat. Although there’s some skepticism in his eyes, they press on and set sail without him.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I must admit that the comical touch brought by Merchant in this episode was truly delightful. But alas, the tragic twist that followed – the gruesome fate of the Last Englishman in England – left me utterly stunned and heartbroken.
In the midst of a tempest, the three navigate their vessel, but a ship’s mast strikes Julian, fatally injuring him. His body transforms into an undead form, prompting Carol to venture dangerously close, narrowly escaping death herself as she tries to reach him.
Although Merchant’s appearance in season 3 was brief, fans delighted at the prospect of him appearing alongside Reedus and McBride on screen.
Seeing Stephen Merchant and Melissa McBride act together on-screen feels like a wish fulfilled.
An additional comment reads: ‘Stephen Merchant truly enriches the Walking Dead universe!’ Another remark expresses regret: ‘That brief appearance was disappointingly short-lived. We adore you, Stephen Merchant.’
It seems that Daryl and Carol didn’t manage to reach the U.S. on Julian’s boat, as one might expect. Instead, due to a storm, they ended up in Spain. We can only guess what challenges lie ahead for them in this new location.
