Dave Chappelle Open to Chappelle’s Show Return Under 1 Condition

Although Dave Chappelle’s comedy show, Chappelle’s Show, ended years ago, there’s talk of bringing it back. If a new version is made, Chappelle feels it’s crucial to have his friend Eddie Murphy participate.

Dave Chappelle recently mentioned to the Associated Press that heā€™s thinking about bringing back Chappelleā€™s Show. He discussed the idea further at an event honoring Eddie Murphy, explaining how important Eddieā€™s late brother, Charlie Murphy, was to the original series. Chappelle stated that if the show returns, Eddie Murphy should take on the role Charlie previously held.

Eddie Murphy Needs to Be Involved

I was talking to someone from the Associated Press about the possibility of bringing Chappelleā€™s Show back, and I told them that if you’d asked me a year ago, I wouldā€™ve said absolutely not. But honestly, doing that show was incredibly tough, even though it was one of the best experiences of my life. A big part of that was Charlie Murphy. I wanted to let Eddie know that Charlie always spoke so highly of him, and was incredibly proud of everything he accomplished.

Chappelle shared that he’d recently seen Murphy, the day after Murphy’s 65th birthday. He described a beautiful day with Murphy’s grandkids happily playing, and said it was the first time theyā€™d talked about their friend Charlie since he died. During their conversation, Murphy suggested making a movie about Chappelleā€™s Show, and Chappelle jokingly replied that it would be difficult because Murphy resembled Charlie so much. He then playfully invited Murphy to play Charlie in the movie if he ever decided to make it.

Charlie Murphy Was a Major Part of Chappelle’s Show

Charlie Murphy was a key part of the hit show Chappelle’s Show, especially known for his hilarious “True Hollywood Stories” segments. One particularly famous sketch featured Dave Chappelle playing Rick James. Charlie wasn’t just a performer; he also wrote for the show and was instrumental to its success. Sadly, he passed away from leukemia in 2017 at the age of 57.

Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan created Chappelle’s Show, which debuted on Comedy Central in 2003 and ran for three seasons. Despite being a hugely popular show, it was cancelled due to reports that the production process was negatively affecting Chappelleā€™s mental health. After taking a break from entertainment, Chappelle returned to performing, and has focused on stand-up comedy specials in recent years.
