David Corenswet might have a long career as the DC Universe’s Man of Steel, but he could consider leaving the Superman series if an offer from a galaxy far, far away arrived. During interviews for Superman, Corenswet and his co-star Nicholas Hoult participated in a lie detector test for Vanity Fair. When asked about returning to the DCU or playing a Jedi Knight in Star Wars, Corenswet surprisingly preferred the latter role. The polygraph operator verified that Corenswet was truthful in his response. Later, he shared another Star Wars character he’d like to portray.
In the end, it essentially boiled down to the financial aspect. Although I’m currently bound by contract for a Superman sequel, I could be eagerly discussing terms for Star Wars, Corenswet humorously responded to Hoult’s query. Ideally, my coveted role would be portraying an X-wing pilot in a Star Wars production. Becoming a Jedi was my childhood aspiration, but now with my interest in aviation, the prospect of sitting inside an X-wing cockpit…well, that’s not only an exciting way to film a movie, but you don’t have to learn any complicated choreography; it’s just like pretending to fly a spaceship.
Under the direction of James Gunn, the movie titled “Superman” marked the initial theatrical appearance of the DC Universe (DCU), setting the stage for a 10-year vision that DC Studios has outlined for its future. The film was met with both critical and commercial acclaim, earning $125 million within its first weekend in domestic theaters. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding a sequel to “Superman”. Gunn has hinted that he’s working on something which might not follow the traditional path of a sequel. The upcoming DCU films include “Supergirl” and “Clayface”, both slated for release next year.
Following a lengthy hiatus from cinemas, the Star Wars series is readying itself for another run on the big screen. The upcoming summer will introduce “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” a follow-up to the popular Disney+ show. Scheduled for release in May 2027 is “Starfighter,” a new Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy, starring Ryan Gosling. Production for “Starfighter” will start towards the end of this year.
In the upcoming movie titled “Starfighter”, it could provide an opportunity for Corenswet to fulfill his dream of being an X-wing pilot. Although specifics about the plot are secret, it’s likely that the film will include some air combat scenes. Given his rising fame following Superman, Corenswet would not have any issues joining the cast. Previously, Star Wars has attracted well-known actors for brief appearances (such as Daniel Craig playing a stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens). So, Corenswet could potentially spend just a few days shooting scenes as a Republic X-wing pilot. He might even land a bigger supporting role if he desired, since there won’t be a new Superman film being shot this year.
For Corenswet, the flexibility exists to select his acting roles amidst potential Superman appearances. However, if he were to consider departing from the franchise for another big-screen project (which might likely involve a sequel to entice him), DC Studios could express their opinions. Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman in the film was highly praised for capturing the essence of the character. It’s exciting to learn that he has already signed on for a sequel, and here’s hoping it doesn’t take too long for its production. With the success of Superman, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery might be eager to capitalize on this momentum.
