David Fincher’s Lost Star Wars Movie Would Have Extended the Sequel Trilogy

Reporting on Hollywood is incredibly competitive. Everyone wants to break the biggest stories, like who’s getting cast in a movie or when a director’s dream project is approved. But the pressure really ramps up when major franchises are involved. This week, things have been especially intense after Adam Driver shared that he and Steven Soderbergh proposed a Star Wars film, titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, to Lucasfilm, set after The Rise of Skywalker. Soderbergh says the project was almost complete when Disney canceled it, reportedly because they weren’t happy with the story idea.

Steven Soderbergh isn’t the only director who’s had a Star Wars project fall through. It’s happened to others, and the recent news about him has brought another name to light: David Fincher. Lucasfilm reportedly considered Fincher to direct Episode VII. While early reports suggested Fincher, like Soderbergh, was interested in a film after The Rise of Skywalker, a different story is now circulating.

According to The Playlist, director David Fincher contacted Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy with an idea for a Star Wars film that would have taken place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The project didn’t develop beyond an initial concept, and both Fincher and Lucasfilm eventually moved on. Still, it’s hard not to wonder what Fincher’s vision was and how it might have impacted the final film in the sequel trilogy.

David Fincher’s Star Wars Movie Could’ve Saved the Sequel Trilogy

Everyone agrees the sequels don’t feel cohesive. Each movie has a different style, which makes the story and characters confusing. This is especially true with The Rise of Skywalker, which essentially undid many of the choices made in The Last Jedi in an attempt to satisfy unhappy fans. Perhaps if a movie had been made between those two films, some of the more controversial decisions in Episode VIII would have been better received.

One idea that often comes up when talking about the sequel trilogy is a movie focusing on Snoke’s past and Kylo Ren’s rise to power. The sequels didn’t develop Snoke’s character enough, abruptly killing him off and then bringing back Palpatine. A film exploring Snoke’s origins and showing Kylo Ren’s difficulties as the new leader of the First Order could have created a compelling power struggle leading into Episode IX, making Palpatine’s return feel less forced.

It’s likely that Fincher’s initial vision for a Star Wars film didn’t align with the direction the sequels ultimately took, considering his reputation for originality. He may have been interested in developing characters like Captain Phasma or Poe Dameron, who had potential but weren’t as central as Kylo Ren or Rey. Ultimately, dwelling on what could have been isn’t productive, and Fincher’s project remains just a glimpse into an alternate path the franchise might have taken.
