David Hockney, legendary British artist, dies aged 88

Influential artist David Hockney has died at the age of 88, his publicist has confirmed.

David Hockney, a leading figure in the 1960s pop art scene, passed away peacefully at his home just weeks before he would have turned 89.

Renowned British artist David Hockney, a major figure in art from the 20th and 21st centuries, died peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026. He was just shy of his 89th birthday.

David Hockney worked as an artist for over sixty years, and he’s famous for combining different art forms – like painting, printmaking, photography, and digital art – in his work. He first became well-known for his paintings of swimming pools, which perfectly captured the look and feel of Los Angeles.

David Hockney was born in Bradford in 1937 as one of five children. He studied at the Royal College of Art and, alongside Peter Blake, was part of the ‘New Contemporaries’ exhibition, which helped launch a new wave of British art. This exhibition marked his association with the emerging movement.

In 1964, he relocated to Los Angeles, and the city’s atmosphere sparked a new direction in his art. He began creating paintings of swimming pools, characterized by their bright and lively colors.

Beyond his famous films, I’ve always been fascinated by the breadth of his creativity. He wasn’t just a filmmaker; he also painted beautiful portraits – often of people he was close to, or even his beloved dogs! And get this – he designed sets for some incredible opera houses, like the Royal Court, Glyndebourne, and the Met in New York. It really shows how much of a visual artist he truly was.

David Hockney received many awards and honors during his career. Notably, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1997 and the Order of Merit in 2012.

Tributes have poured in for the artist, with many expressing their condolences on social media.

Art historian Richard Morris expressed his shock at the news of David Hockney’s passing. Morris praised Hockney’s ability to make complex painting seem easy and highlighted his decades-long exploration of how we see, understand space, and create images – a pursuit few artists have matched since World War II. He described Hockney as a monumental figure in British art.
