David Tennant is officially returning as the Tenth Doctor in a brand new Doctor Who adventure.
The actor is returning to play the same character in the sci-fi series after first appearing three years ago. He originally became famous as the Tenth Doctor, playing the role from season 2 to season 4. Most recently, he rejoined the cast of Doctor Who as the Fourteenth Doctor, who looked just like his previous version of the character.
Doctor Who has announced that David Tennant will reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor in a new 15-episode audio series. These hour-long episodes will be fully acted out. The first 12 episodes will be released every other month, starting in August 2027, and the final three will be available as physical copies, including collaborations with other Doctors.
Big Finish is producing a new series called The Tenth Doctor Adventures, and you can pre-order it now on their website. The first episode is scheduled for release in August 2027, and new episodes will come out every two months, with the twelfth and final episode arriving in June 2029. Here’s what Nicholas Briggs, Big Finish’s creative director, has to say about the series:
We’re hoping David will be back with us soon. He’s a very popular and busy actor, and his schedule often makes it difficult for him to find time to visit the studio.
We’re thrilled to share exciting new stories, and we’re especially happy to have him back! Prepare yourself for a wild ride filled with fast-paced, funny, and sometimes scary audio dramas – you’ll be surprised from the very beginning.
David Tennant is thrilled to be back as the Tenth Doctor, joking that recording with Big Finish is simple: “You just show up, have fun, and somehow save the universe!” This will be his first time reprising the role since the recent 60th anniversary specials, which concluded with the Fourteenth Doctor splitting into the Fifteenth Doctor.
The latest adventures featuring the Tenth Doctor are being released at a time of significant change for the TV show. After season 15 ended, Disney+ decided not to continue its partnership with the BBC for producing and distributing new episodes. As a result, the show won’t be back until a Christmas special planned for release in 2026.
Fortunately, because Tennant’s audio series is planned for a long run, fans can look forward to many new stories, even if the TV show doesn’t continue. Both Tennant and Briggs are enthusiastic about what’s next for the Tenth Doctor in audio, and the possibility of other Doctors appearing in the last three episodes makes it even more exciting.
The upcoming Tenth Doctor Adventures further prove that audio dramas are now a key part of the Doctor Who universe. With so many previous Doctors successfully returning in audio, Big Finish seems well-equipped to deliver a fantastic return for David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, promising plenty of exciting new stories.
