Bend Studio is currently developing a new game for PlayStation 5 or potentially PlayStation 6, and it seems like this upcoming title won’t be a sequel to Days Gone. Seven years have passed since the Oregon-based studio released Days Gone in 2018, a game that sold well but received mixed reviews. Although Days Gone was remastered for the PS5, no new projects from Bend Studio or related to Days Gone have been announced since then.
Unfortunately, Bend Studio has faced challenges recently. They’ve had some cancelled projects and laid off 30% of their staff this summer. Despite these difficulties, they are actively seeking senior talent, such as a creative director, indicating that the project they’re currently working on is still in its early stages.
Currently, Sony’s PlayStation division is on the hunt for a talented Creative Director to guide the development of Bend Studio’s upcoming game. This news is intriguing because it implies that the studio hasn’t started working on their next project as of yet, given that a creative director is essential for its progression. However, what really piques curiosity are the specifics included in the job posting.
Multiplayer
In the job description for PlayStation, they state that applicants should possess experience in multiplayer game development and design. This requirement is relevant when it comes to creating multiplayer games or projects with significant multiplayer elements. However, considering a game like Days Gone doesn’t feature multiplayer, and hypothetically speaking, a potential Days Gone 2 might not either, this expertise would not be directly applicable in those cases.
Lack of Days Gone Mentioned
It’s worth noting that the job posting only references “Days Gone” once, specifically in a section showcasing past projects of the studio. Interestingly, there’s no requirement for candidates to have any prior knowledge of “Days Gone”, be it its world, characters, storyline, or gameplay systems. Additionally, they are seeking expertise in multiplayer, suggesting this project is unlikely to be “Days Gone 2” or a sequel or spin-off of the same kind.
In the past, rumors indicated Sony had no interest in “Days Gone,” which could be why the studio’s leadership and creative team stepped down following the game’s launch. However, past job postings hint at Bend Studio focusing on live-service games, even after some cancellations. Given this, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the studio is heading in that direction.
As usual, feel free to share your thoughts below, or engage in the discussion over on the ComicBook Forums. So, what kind of projects do you hope Bend Studio will work on next?
