I suspected it, but now I’m certain who would be perfect to write future Deadpool stories. For the first major crossover event between Marvel and DC in a long time, the publishers decided to focus on two of their most popular and successful characters: Batman and Deadpool. They released two separate crossover issues – one from Marvel and one from DC – both filled with Wade Wilson’s signature violence and tendency to break the fourth wall.
Both Marvel and DC have successfully paired Deadpool and Batman in crossover stories. Marvel’s version, written by Zeb Wells, was a fast-paced, action-filled adventure. DC’s story, penned by Grant Morrison, was funny and cleverly self-aware. While both writers did a great job, one of them particularly showed how to perfectly capture the voice of Marvel’s unpredictable anti-hero, Deadpool, and should be considered for future Deadpool comics.
Batman/Deadpool Proves It: We Need a Grant Morrison Deadpool Series

While Zeb Wells has done good work, Grant Morrison really showed what Deadpool could be. Their DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1, illustrated by Dan Mora, quickly dives into chaotic fun with Deadpool battling cartoon ninjas and dropping clever comic book jokes. Staying true to the character, Deadpool constantly talks to the reader, breaking the fourth wall with moments like a nod to the famous “I can see you” panel from Animal Man.
Deadpool and Batman are stuck inside a mind-bending reality created by Cassandra Nova, who’s hunting for something called the Quantum Keyboard. While Batman tries to figure out what’s going on, Deadpool mostly makes jokes and references obscure comic book details. They’re attacked by ninjas, and Batman deliberately lets himself be defeated to prove they’re in a fake world. This doesn’t sit well with Deadpool, who revives Batman using a Lazarus Pit—but Bruce comes back as Dark Claw, a character created from a crossover event, thanks to writer Grant Morrison’s fondness for those kinds of references.
Luckily, the heroes break free from Nova’s control and discover the Quantum Keyboard and its creator, who is based on the author Grant Morrison (fans of Animal Man will recognize him). Nova tries to steal the Keyboard, but quickly realizes the Writer is actually the one controlling everything. The Writer then combines Batman and Deadpool into a single hero—Deadbat—who easily defeats the villain. The story concludes with Deadpool delivering Nova’s head to the TVA, happily declaring how much he enjoyed the adventure with the team.
Grant Morrison’s Still Got It, and We Need to See Them on Deadpool ASAP

I’ve been a fan of Grant Morrison’s work for a long time, so I expected to enjoy this book. I was mainly curious to see their take on Batman and how they’d manage such a complex story. What really surprised me, though, was how well they wrote Deadpool. It doesn’t totally shock me – a chaotic, fourth-wall-breaking hero feels like a perfect fit for Morrison’s style. But they truly made Deadpool captivating and genuinely funny in this book.
I’ve always struggled to connect with Deadpool, even though I’ve tried. I watched the movies, but the comics never quite clicked for me. It’s a tough character to get right – people want it to be funny, self-aware, emotionally resonant, and a little bit irritating. That’s a lot for any writer to handle! However, I think Grant Morrison really nailed all those elements in this series, and I could definitely see this approach leading to a long and successful run for the character.
It’s unlikely we’ll ever see Grant Morrison write a Deadpool comic series, though it’s nice to know revisiting the character rekindled their passion for superhero stories. Marvel probably won’t hire them for Deadpool, but I believe Morrison would be fantastic. They made writing Deadpool seem effortless, and I think they have a lot more creative ideas for the character. While it’s a long shot, Morrison would undoubtedly create an amazing Deadpool comic if given the opportunity.
