DC Brings Back an Underrated Hero for His First Series in 8 Years

DC Comics is giving a beloved hero a second chance! The publisher has seen a major boost thanks to its “All In” strategy, which has revitalized the entire brand with popular new books like the recent Batman relaunch and the Absolute Universe line. “All In” successfully reinforced DC’s core titles, providing a strong base for both longtime readers and newcomers. Now, as DC moves forward, they’re bringing back a fan-favorite character who was previously considered lost.

DC Comics used the ComicsPRO conference to preview some upcoming titles before their May announcements. Along with new Absolute editions like Absolute Green Arrow and Absolute Catwoman, DC is focusing on lesser-known characters. One example is The Deadman, a new comic by W. Maxwell Prince and Martín Morazzo. This series continues the story of the hero, Boston Brand, after the events of DC K.O., and sees him trying to restore balance to a disrupted afterlife.

DC Next Level is Going Strong with The Deadman

It’s been a few years since Deadman, DC’s famous ghost detective, had his own comic series – the last one came out in 2018 and was created by the renowned Neal Adams. However, he’s a recurring character in the DC Universe, frequently helping the Justice League Dark team, and recently had a significant part in the Knight Terrors storyline. It’ll be great to see him take center stage again, particularly in a story that seems to delve into the consequences of the DC K.O. event.

I’m really excited about reading The Deadman! Not only does it feature a DC hero who deserves more recognition, but it’s created by the same team behind the uniquely strange and visually stunning Ice Cream Man and Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum. Those books were wonderfully weird, and that style seems perfect for Deadman, a character who really benefits from fresh, creative storytelling. I have a feeling Prince and Morazzao are going to deliver something truly unsettling and captivating.

I was excited to hear DC was spotlighting some of its more obscure characters with the Next Level initiative, and I’m really impressed with how they’re doing it. It’s great to see these characters getting attention, and even better that DC is pairing them with creative teams who seem perfectly suited to tell their stories. As a fan of both Deadman and the writing/art team of Prince and Morazzo, I’m thrilled about this news. If the new Deadman series is anything like their previous work, I think fans are going to love it.
