Over the past few years, I’ve eagerly waited for the return of the Legion of Super-Heroes, a team that has long captivated my imagination. However, their comeback didn’t quite live up to expectations. The Legion, unfortunately, went through a less than favorable reboot under the guidance of Brian Michael Bendis and found themselves in an eternal limbo. In a twisted turn of events, an evil iteration of the team emerged within the pages of DC All-In, serving under Darkseid.
At last, Superman confronted this new incarnation of the Omega Legion in the comic series by Joshua Williamson, Superman. After forming questionable partnerships with the Time Trapper, a future variant of Doomsday, and Superboy-Prime, Superman embarked on a journey into the future to reconnect with a righteous version of the Legion.
In the comic book “Superman #29,” it was unfortunately revealed that the Legion of Super-Heroes, a beloved team in the DC Universe, had been completely eradicated. Over the years, several iterations of this group have appeared, but this storyline reveals that all four major versions were vanquished by Darkseid’s forces. This revelation is particularly distressing for fans who had hoped to see a more engaging version of the Legion following the less popular Bendis-written comics. As for the future of the Legion, it remains uncertain at this time.
What Happened to the Legion of Super-Heroes?

In 2019, writer Brian Michael Bendis and a group of artists undertook a comprehensive redesign of the Legion of Super-Heroes, but despite their efforts, the revamped team did not achieve the level of success that DC Comics had anticipated, eventually leading to the team being placed on hold. After Bendis departed from DC, his incarnation of the Legion made a brief appearance in Williamson’s Green Arrow series. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Williamson was laying groundwork for the return of the Legion of Super-Heroes, as he reintroduced elements like the Legion ring and the concept of the Great Darkness. Later, when the Omega Legion was introduced, Williamson hinted at a dark future event, which was later confirmed in Superman #29.
In this rephrased version, let’s imagine:
The original Superman comic book introduced four primary groups of the Legion of Super-Heroes, who banded together to combat the Omega Legion. Unfortunately, they were on the brink of annihilation. Amidst the ruins, Superman and Superboy-Prime located several surviving team members, including all iterations of Brainiac 5.
The remaining heroes from the good Legion managed to apprehend Darkseid’s version of Brainiac 5, uncovering how this villain had orchestrated the creation of a new Legion. Superman endeavored to motivate the dwindling Legion team, but their secret hideout was soon breached by a malevolent Chameleon Boy who called forth the rest of the Evil Legion. In the ensuing chaos, one of Brainiac 5s perished in Superman’s arms.
Feeling compelled to act, Superman dashed to the Time Institute to save Booster Gold. However, an unexpected turn of events unfolded when Superboy-Prime seemed to have switched allegiances, attacking Superman instead.
Can Superman Save the Legion?

Fans of the long-enduring Legion haven’t been happy with their representation in Superman #29. Following decades of being overlooked, the Legion of Superheroes gets an introductory scene that’s downright gruesome. Pieces of multiple iterations of the team are strewn across the battlefield, a stark contrast to the cheerful, nostalgic futurism they once embodied. The surviving members are disheartened and despondent, with the story concluding tragically as one of the main Brainiac 5s succumbs to death.
Luckily, even amidst the disorder and devastation, there’s a positive aspect to consider. Fans anticipate that the Legion of Superheroes will reemerge following DC K.O., an upcoming event series where heroes and villains compete in a tournament. Although the team has been somewhat overlooked, the Legion of Superheroes remains one of DC Comics’ flagship superhero teams. Regardless of how many disappointing reboots fans have received, the team continues to hold a significant place within the DC library. Given their importance to Superman’s past, it’s likely that Superman will devise a plan to rescue his buddies from the future.
