For months, the Absolute Universe series has been offering fresh takes on popular DC characters, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Wonder Woman has seen some of the biggest changes, and fans have really responded well. This new version reimagines Wonder Woman as a powerful warrior witch, raised in Hell, who comes to Earth to protect it and learn about her past as the last of the Amazons. It’s a unique spin on the classic character, keeping some familiar elements while significantly altering others-especially her villains.
Wonder Woman is known as one of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe, but Zatanna, DC’s top magician, could rival her. Now, in a new story called Absolute Wonder Woman, these two powerful women will face off to finally determine who is truly stronger.
The Two Top Heroines for Sixty Years

Wonder Woman rightfully earns the title of top superheroine. She’s one of the oldest and most successful, first appearing in 1942 in *All-Star Comics* #8. Zatanna also became a hero early on, but didn’t debut until 1964 in *Hawkman* #4. Both quickly became popular and powerful figures. Wonder Woman essentially set the standard for all future superheroines, just as Superman did for heroes. Zatanna benefited from being introduced as the daughter of the Golden Age hero Zatara, which helped her fit seamlessly into the evolving world of superheroes.
Diana will likely always be the more well-known and impactful of the two, but Zatanna excels in her own areas, particularly as the go-to magic user for heroes in need. The pair are close friends who frequently collaborate – Wonder Woman often seeks Zatanna’s magical insight, while Zatanna relies on Wonder Woman’s strength. They even co-led the magic-focused *Justice League Dark* (2018), with Diana as the leader and Zatanna as her trusted second-in-command and magical expert. They’ve always worked well together, rarely disagreeing beyond the occasional instance of mind control or someone pretending to be one of them. However, this strong friendship is now on the verge of turning into a fierce rivalry.
Absolute Witch vs. Absolute Magician

It’s hard to say who would win a fight between Zatanna and Wonder Woman in the standard DC Universe. Zatanna often battles powerful magical and cosmic threats, while Wonder Woman has fought gods and even Superman using her strength and courage. While Zatanna is incredibly skilled and could potentially win with a clever strategy, Wonder Woman’s sheer power and magical abilities likely give her the edge. However, in the Absolute Universe, the dynamic shifts completely. We don’t know the full extent of Zatanna’s powers there, but we *do* know Wonder Woman is a highly accomplished sorceress.
Okay, so this Absolute Wonder Woman is *powerful*. We’re talking on par with the classic Diana, but with added magic – seriously, she can deafen entire cities or open up portals to other dimensions. And the lassos? Forget about it. One judges and burns based on your sins, another turns her into a giant, Medusa-like monster, and the third… well, we don’t even *know* what it does yet. Meanwhile, Absolute Zatanna is being held down hard – think straitjacket, chains, and a muzzle – in some top-secret government facility. It’s clear they see her as even *more* dangerous than Wonder Woman in this universe, and honestly, after seeing what Wonder Woman can do, that’s saying something.
It’s hard to say exactly what this new version of Zatanna can do, but her restraints suggest she’s a powerful magic user who doesn’t *just* rely on speaking backwards to cast spells. Unlike her original self, who used backwards speech as a way to focus, this Zatanna likely has a greater ability to unleash destructive magic through any part of her body. In terms of raw magical power, she’s probably stronger than Wonder Woman and might even be able to redirect Wonder Woman’s own spells. However, Wonder Woman is a highly trained warrior, hardened by a difficult upbringing. She’s faster and stronger than Zatanna, and her magical defenses should be strong enough to counter Zatanna’s attacks.
Ultimately, I believe Wonder Woman would win this fight, though Zatanna is capable of pulling off a surprising move or spell. Either way, the battle will finally resolve a debate that’s been going on for sixty years! What are your thoughts? Share them in the ComicBook Forum and join the discussion!
