Meanwhile, DC Comics has successfully created its own separate universe of stories with the Absolute Universe line, which has attracted both new and existing readers. Capitalizing on Marvel’s decision to conclude its Ultimate Universe, DC is now solidifying its position as the leading force in the comic book industry.

The Decision to End The Ultimate Universe Is A Big Mistake

While wrapping up long-running comic series can be tempting, Marvel’s Ultimate Universe still has plenty of stories to explore. The recent conclusion of Ultimate Fallout with its twenty-fourth issue felt rushed to many readers, leaving storylines unfinished. The same feeling applies to Ultimate X-Men, and even The Ultimates, despite still being ongoing, appears to be cramming a lot of plot into its remaining issues before concluding.

Deniz Camp’s Ultimate Endgame has been a consistently captivating event for the Ultimate Universe, but its role as the conclusion to the entire line is unfortunately underwhelming. Fans have consistently enjoyed the Ultimate books since their inception, with the series being the sole Marvel title many readers followed monthly. The accessibility and fresh take offered by books like Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimates were a welcome change, and it’s disheartening to see that era come to a close.

One of the most disappointing parts of the Ultimate Universe ending is that so many interesting new versions of classic characters were introduced right before it was cancelled. We saw Ultimate Daredevil, Ultimate Ghost Rider, and lots of other unique heroes and villains, but fans barely had a chance to get to know them. This lack of development is a major problem with ending the universe, and many believe Marvel is making a mistake, especially as DC Comics seems to be benefiting from it.

DC’s Absolute Universe Has Shown No Signs of Slowing Down

DC Comics offers a similar approach with its Absolute editions. Like Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, these books provide fresh, accessible stories for both new and longtime fans. You don’t need to be familiar with decades of backstory to enjoy these tales of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other heroes – they’re designed to be enjoyed as standalone adventures, free from complicated continuity.

Though Ultimate Spider-Man is being forgotten by comic book fans, Absolute Batman continues to captivate them. As The Ultimates finishes its run as Marvel’s top title, Scott Snyder has confirmed that the Absolute Universe will remain ongoing, which is currently DC’s smartest move.

Marvel seems to be making a big mistake by ending some of its most successful storylines, and DC Comics is well-positioned to benefit. Marvel will soon lack any comparable series to DC’s highly regarded Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman collections. Even individual titles like Captain America are increasingly connected to larger, overarching events within the Marvel Universe, losing their independent appeal.

For years, Marvel has been known for innovative and groundbreaking comics. While the Ultimate Universe briefly matched that level of creativity, it’s now fading. DC Comics is poised to become the leading publisher, offering comics that are both accessible and creatively ambitious.
