DC Comics Just Gave Supergirl Her Coolest (And Most Dangerous) Upgrade Ever

With a new movie on the horizon, Supergirl is about to undergo a significant and somewhat frightening transformation. Over the past year, Kara Zor-El has been exploring her past in Midvale, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones while facing a series of unusual challenges. She’s been managing these threats while also guiding Lesla-Lar, a young Kryptonian she’s been training to be a hero. However, things have changed now that Lesla has been summoned back to her home in the ancient, contained city of Kandor.

Soon after Lesla returned to Kandor, she reconnected with her cousin, Zora Vi-Lar, also known as the Black Flame. Together, they released a dangerous plague called Rust, hoping to draw Supergirl to them – and it worked. Kara shrank down to a tiny size and discovered Lesla and Zora, but Zora was determined to defeat her. The Black Flame stole Supergirl’s solar ring – the source of Kara’s powers – and brutally attacked her before throwing her off a cliff. Luckily, Kandor’s top scientists had a solution ready to help Supergirl recover.

DC Comics Unleashes Supergirl’s ‘Cyborggirl’ Form

In issue #12 of Supergirl, created by Sophie Campbell, Tamra Bonvillain, and Becca Carey, Kara finds herself waking up in a lab on Kandor. Scientist Kim-Da explains they had to take extreme steps to save her life. Once awake, Kara realizes how badly she was injured. The left side of her body has been enhanced with cybernetic parts – her leg, arm, and eye are all now robotic. Kim-Da assures her these enhancements are temporary and powered by solar energy, which will help Kara recover most of her powers.

Supergirl confronts the Science Council about the Black Flame and Lesla-Lar, angrily explaining that the current conflict started because the council kept a secret genetic flaw from young Kryptonians, preventing them from escaping Kandor. She then learns the council has even more to answer for: they’ve secretly cloned Superman’s former protégé, Boy Thunder, and built a team of controlled heroes to fight the Black Flame. However, Zora and a group of young Kryptonians attack the council’s headquarters, determined to take them down.

Even after being cautioned, Supergirl jumps into the battle and confronts Black Flame head-on. Empowered by the solar ring, Zora easily breaks Supergirl’s robotic arm. But the arm quickly fixes itself and transforms into a cannon, targeting Black Flame. Supergirl understands the technology is built for fighting and begins firing various weapons at Zora – a laser from her shoulder, a gun hidden in her knee, and more. Despite her efforts, Supergirl can’t manage to control the new implants.

Cyborggirl is Cool, But It’s the Last Thing Kara Needs Right Now

I really like the direction the story is taking with Supergirl. Given that her father, Zor-El, previously became the Cyborg Superman, turning Kara into ‘Cyborggirl’ feels like a clever callback. Plus, the design looks fantastic – I’ve always enjoyed seeing heroes with cyborg upgrades, even if they’re temporary. However, while I find this storyline interesting, giving Supergirl enhancements she can’t control is probably the worst thing that could happen to her right now.

Kandor is on the verge of exploding. Young people are protesting the Science Council’s secrecy about a genetic problem, and the Black Flame is becoming dangerously powerful with Kara’s ring. A contained city can’t handle this much conflict, and unfortunately, Supergirl’s recent upgrades are making things worse – she’s a risk to herself and others. If her cybernetic enhancements are acting independently and willing to kill, especially young people, the outcome could be horrific.

Kara’s faced worse problems, so I’m confident she’ll figure this out. However, she needs to understand that her powers are incredibly dangerous – they could accidentally kill Black Flame, Lesla-Lar, or anyone else the cybernetics target. If someone dies, it will only deepen the existing divisions within Kandor. Hopefully, Supergirl can regain control and find a peaceful solution.
