DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, known for groundbreaking series like Sandman, Fables, and Preacher, is entering a new chapter with a wave of fresh titles. While Vertigo was a DC mainstay for over thirty years, it began to decline as other publishers focusing on creator-owned work gained popularity. DC attempted revivals, but eventually closed Vertigo in 2020, replacing it with DC Black Label. However, this February, DC relaunched Vertigo with its most ambitious effort in years.
Following the spirit of the original Vertigo imprint, DC has brought on some of the most promising creators in comics for this new version. Talents like James Tynion IV, Deniz Camp, Steve Pugh, and Jacob Phillips are all contributing to this exciting project. The relaunched Vertigo is starting small, with just a few titles like Bleeding Hearts and The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery. With so few books available, you might be curious about which ones are worth reading – keep reading to find out the best of Vertigo’s new lineup.
4. The Peril of the Brual Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery

Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips’s new book, The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery, centers around a private investigator caught up in a bizarre case involving an ancient artifact and the Greek god Hephaestus. The story is complex, blending many different ideas, and might feel a bit overwhelming at times. While it’s a good read, it seems like the full story will really come together when all the pieces are available. Fans who enjoy a slowly unfolding detective story will likely find a lot to appreciate here!
3. End of Life

I might be a little partial to End of Life, to be honest. I was a big fan of Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh’s previous work, Peacemaker Tries Hard!, and this feels very similar in spirit. The story follows an overconfident (and somewhat obnoxious) hitman who breaks the rules of his organization and has to go into hiding in his hometown, where he reconnects with his father who is nearing the end of his life. It strikes a great balance between humor and action, and while I think it’s fantastic, I understand it might not appeal to everyone. However, if you enjoyed Peacemaker, you’ll likely enjoy this too.
2. Nice House by the Sea

Following up on the success of Nice House on the Lake, Nice House by the Sea has a unique position as the only new Vertigo comic to begin publication before the line’s recent relaunch. Like the first story, it centers around a group of strangers who find themselves sheltering in a house while the world ends around them. It’s a genuinely unsettling and disturbing comic with all the elements of a great horror story. If you haven’t read either James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martinez Bueno’s Nice House on the Lake or its sequel, I strongly recommend checking them out.
1. Bleeding Hearts

The creators of 20th Century Men, Deniz Camp and Stipan Moran, are back with Bleeding Hearts, a surprisingly touching story. It’s set after a zombie apocalypse, but with a twist – the zombies have already won, and society has adapted to their existence. The story centers around a zombie named Poke who experiences a strange transformation when he unexpectedly develops a heartbeat. More than just a typical zombie tale, Bleeding Hearts explores themes of community, finding where you belong, and what it truly means to be human. While it’s still early days, I’m really impressed and believe this comic has the potential to become a modern classic.
