DC Confirms Lobo Breaks The Fourth Wall in Supergirl’s Best Look Yet at Jason Momoa’s Antihero

The first trailer for the new Supergirl movie is out, giving fans a better idea of what to expect. Director Craig Gillespie described the film as a gritty revenge story, similar to True Grit. The trailer clearly shows why Kara (Millie Alcock) will unleash her full power – spurred by a near-fatal incident involving her dog, Krypto. Kara teams up with Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) to hunt down Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), the man who killed her family. They’ll be joined by Jason Momoa as Lobo, a hard-drinking and extremely violent ally.

The latest trailer for Supergirl gives fans the clearest view yet of Lobo and shows him in action. He looks exactly as he does in the comics! While Jason Momoa’s voice isn’t drastically different from his Aquaman role – similar to Emmett Scanlon’s portrayal of Lobo in Krypton – the new footage confirms why Momoa felt destined to play the character even when he was first cast as Aquaman. It seems inevitable that a standalone Lobo movie will happen soon.

There’s a quick moment where Lobo acknowledges the audience by looking at the camera and saying “touche.” This happens after he playfully asks Kara if she’s the “airhead from that bar,” and she cleverly retorts by calling him the same thing.

Lobo Has Already Proved Himself to Be Momoa’s Perfect Aquaman Replacement

After the DC Extended Universe concluded somewhat disappointingly, and Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom didn’t perform as well as the first Aquaman film (even though many felt it was equally good), it became clear Jason Momoa wasn’t quite finished with the DC universe. He’d often expressed his interest in playing Lobo, the last of his kind and a famous bounty hunter, and his portrayal of Aquaman already showed a lot of Lobo’s influence. Both characters share a similar personality: they’re tough, swear, enjoy a fight, and aren’t afraid to be a bit wild – and, as the new trailer shows, they both enjoy a drink.

It’s not about the destination. It’s about the e̶n̶e̶m̶i̶e̶s̶ friends you make along the way.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman basically launched the DC Universe with a brooding, solitary hero – a character very similar to the one Lobo originally made fun of. While often compared to Wolverine, Aquaman was more about poking fun at common hero tropes than copying any one specific character. Momoa’s experience playing Aquaman naturally positions him to be a great Lobo. The trailer for Lobo suggests he’ll take everything fans loved about Aquaman – the fun, rebellious energy – and amplify it, without needing to occasionally justify a faithful comic book costume. Lobo’s signature wild appearance is already built-in, and it seems Momoa will deliver an even more unpredictable and enjoyable antihero this time around.
