DC Confirms Nightwing is the Better Batman (And That Might Not Be a Good Thing)

Bruce Wayne became Batman after witnessing the tragic death of his parents, and the role has become central to who he is. Driven to save Gotham City from injustice, he’s dedicated his life to this fight, even if it costs him everything. Along the way, Bruce connected with several young, determined heroes and took them under his wing as his partners – the Robins. Many wonder if one of these young heroes will eventually become the next Batman. In fact, Dick Grayson has already taken on the mantle, and the recent comic DC K.O. Knightfight #1 confirms he’s once again the Dark Knight.

This comic introduces a fresh setting where Bruce Wayne discovers a peaceful Gotham City. Similar to when everyone believed he had died, Dick Grayson stepped up to become the new Batman. During his time as Batman, Dick redefined the role while honoring its legacy. But the main question this issue – and the whole series – explores is whether Dick should permanently take over as the Dark Knight, even if he’s a more effective Batman. Let’s explore that idea further.

A Better World With a Better Batman

Knowing he might not survive the tournament to determine the next King Omega, Batman prepared a Mother Box to teleport him back to Gotham if he was defeated. However, when he returned, it wasn’t the Gotham he knew. He found himself in a futuristic version of the city and was immediately attacked by several unfamiliar Robins. They forced him to a location where Dick Grayson appeared, wearing his own version of the Bat-suit. Dick explained that the Bruce Wayne he remembered had gone insane from using the Lazarus Pits and that he had taken over as Batman. Bruce tried to explain what happened, but Dick refused to listen, leading to a fight between them.

Throughout their fight, Bruce was amazed by Dick’s abilities, and Dick proudly explained everything he’d achieved as Batman. Dick had saved Gotham by rallying allies and establishing a training program, effectively creating a network of Robins – anyone willing to learn could become one. He confidently asserted he was a more effective Batman than Bruce, even managing to knock him down. Bruce conceded he hadn’t been fighting at full strength, but the truth was Dick had saved the world in a way Bruce hadn’t. Dick explained his success stemmed from possessing Bruce’s skills and the ability to trust and accept help from others – a skill Bruce always struggled with.

Nightwing Could Be a Better Batman, But Should He?

This story strongly suggests Dick Grayson would make a great Batman, and there’s history to support that idea. After the Infinite Crisis event, Dick successfully took on the role of Batman, honoring the character’s intimidating legacy while also becoming a symbol of hope for the city. Even when Bruce Wayne returned, he recognized Dick’s success and wanted him to continue as Gotham’s primary Batman. This raises the question: is now the right time for Dick to become Batman again?

Nightwing has become increasingly popular, with fans appreciating his story of establishing himself as a hero independent of Batman, while still earning significant respect within the superhero world. His decision to become Nightwing, rather than continue as Batman, is now central to who he is. Having him return to the Batman role after clearly moving on could feel like a step backward. Plus, DC risks losing the momentum they’ve built over the last five years in establishing Nightwing as one of their key characters.

Bringing Dick Grayson back as Batman has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it would fulfill a long-held promise – ever since he was Robin, stories hinted he was destined to become Batman. From early concepts to the ‘Prodigal’ storyline and his actions in Battle for the Cowl, Dick took on the mantle to protect the world. This would represent a natural evolution for the Batman mythos, demonstrate that Batman is an idea bigger than any one person, and significantly shake things up in the DC Universe.

However, some argue that Dick Grayson abandoning the Nightwing persona would undo all his personal development over the years, effectively ending the character as fans know him – a truly unfortunate outcome. This also raises questions about Bruce Wayne’s future: would he continue as a secondary Batman, or finally retire and offer support in other capacities? Many fans would be disappointed to see Bruce step down as the Caped Crusader. If Dick permanently became Batman, it would fundamentally change the character, and that change might not be well-received.

There are both pros and cons to Dick Grayson becoming Batman, and it’s debatable whether he’d even be better at the job. What’s your opinion?
