2025 proved to be a significant year for the new DC Universe (DCU) created by Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The franchise kicked off with the film *Superman*, which became the year’s biggest superhero hit. That was followed by Season 2 of *Peacemaker*, which quickly worked to establish its place within *this* new universe, distinguishing itself from previous DC adaptations. The season finale, which aired last night, strongly signaled the direction the DCU is heading – and it doesn’t appear to include another season of *Peacemaker*. Be warned: the following contains spoilers for Season 2 of *Peacemaker*.
The major storylines in *Peacemaker*’s second season largely conclude in the finale. The 11th Street Kids leave ARGUS to form their own group, Checkmate. More significantly, ARGUS and Rick Flag discover a habitable, Earth-like planet using the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, naming it Sanctuary. Their plan is to solve Earth’s meta-human issues by sending them to Sanctuary and closing off access – and that’s exactly what they do to Peacemaker in the final moments. The episode ends with Christopher Smith stranded on this new planet, seemingly ending the series.
James Gunn Has No Plans for Peacemaker Season 3 (But Won’t Say Never)

James Gunn confirmed there won’t be a Season 3 of *Peacemaker* right now, during a recent interview with ComicBook. However, he didn’t completely dismiss the possibility of more *Peacemaker* in the future. He explained that while Season 3 isn’t planned, the storyline introduced in Season 2 will continue within the broader DC Universe, just in different projects.
James Gunn hinted that the focus is on the larger DC Universe and how stories will unfold within it. While he didn’t completely rule out a third season of ‘Peacemaker,’ he confirmed there are no current plans for one. He emphasized that the priority is building the future of the DCU, and that Peacemaker will be a significant part of it.
Gunn also emphasized that Checkmate will be a significant organization within the DC Universe going forward, operating independently from groups like ARGUS and the Justice League.
Checkmate is going to be a significant player going forward. They’ve established themselves, and I expect them to excel at what they do. The next time we see them, they’ll likely be in a much more developed position than they are as a new company now.
As a big fan, I’ve been thinking about what happened with the Sanctuary storyline in *Peacemaker* Season 2, and it seems like that plot could definitely show up in the new DCU. While it *might* be touched on in the *Supergirl* movie, I’m guessing we’ll probably see it explored more in the *Man of Tomorrow* movie planned for 2027, or maybe even in the *Lanterns* HBO series. I was hoping for a straight answer when someone asked James Gunn if we’d see Peacemaker or any of the other characters in those projects, but he just said, “Well, we’ll have to see. That’s a secret!” So, frustratingly, we’ll just have to wait and see!
James Gunn clarified that the Sanctuary storyline in the DC Universe won’t follow the comic book version. The comics featured villains banding together, even leading to a fight between the Joker and Lex Luthor, but Gunn confirmed this won’t be happening in the DCU.
What really grabbed me about this story was the central idea – a prison designed to be utterly inescapable. It’s a fascinating setup, especially because the creators initially underestimate the danger, despite the comics clearly establishing it as a serious threat. We get hints of that danger in the film, of course. But beyond the escape-proof walls, I was captivated by the thought experiment: what happens when you gather all these ‘bad’ super-powered individuals and force them to build a new society from scratch? That’s where the real potential of this story lies, and what initially drew me in as a viewer.
