The Absolute Universe is constantly growing, offering fresh and surprising takes on famous DC Comics villains. Since its launch a year and a half ago, this series has presented unique versions of classic enemies. Whether it’s the Reverse-Flash in Absolute Flash or the demonic Joker in Absolute Batman, these villains are more than just visually interesting. The creators have reimagined their origins, giving them complex motivations and helping readers understand what drives them.
The comic series Absolute Superman has done an excellent job of delving into the backstories of its villains. The writers haven’t been afraid to take chances, showing fresh takes on characters like Ra’s al Ghul and Lex Luthor. Now, Absolute Superman is beginning a new story arc, introducing a villain fans have been eagerly anticipating. This version of the villain is different from the one in the main DC Universe, and the story explores those differences and what they mean for the future of this alternate world.
Absolute Black Adam is Here, a Techno-Magical Marvel

Okay, so I just finished reading Absolute Superman #18, and it really grabbed me from the start. The story opens with this amazing flashback to Ancient Egypt, showing us a young Teth-Adam – basically Black Adam when he was a slave. He’s working with his people, and even though he’s small for his age, he’s already showing that defiant streak, sticking up for everyone when the guards are being awful. Things are pretty hopeless for them, honestly. But then this mysterious, ghostly figure shows up and starts talking about a savior who’s coming to change everything. Teth-Adam doesn’t want to wait for a savior, though – he decides he’s going to be that savior and takes off on his own. It’s a really compelling beginning!
Teth-Adam, after hearing rumors of a wish-granting wizard in the desert, tirelessly searches for him. Instead of finding a wizard, he’s captured by the Brainiac Collective and brought aboard their ship. They aren’t interested in helping him fulfill his desire to do good, but they recognize the intense anger inside him. The Collective decides to experiment on Teth-Adam with a strange artifact recovered from a black hole called the Father Box. This transforms him into something incredibly powerful, though the full extent of this change remains unknown.
In the current DC Universe, Superman rushes to a Lazarus Corps facility to prevent Lois Lane from seeking revenge against Talia and Ra’s al Ghul. During the confrontation, Talia uses a powerful artifact called the Father Box to weaken Superman. However, the arrival of a mysterious, masked hero with a hammer gives Superman an opening to strike the Father Box, sending it crashing into a sarcophagus belonging to the al Ghuls. The symbol of a lightning bolt on the crypt suddenly lights up, and a massive, lightning-charged warrior bursts forth, introducing himself as King Shazam.
What Black Adam’s Arrival Means for the Absolute Universe

He calls himself King Shazam, but he’s essentially a new version of Black Adam. He still has the key elements that define the character – a powerful rage, incredible abilities gained by chance, and a long period of imprisonment. However, like other figures in this universe, something is missing – in his case, the wizard who originally gave Teth-Adam his powers. While the Father Box has clearly made him immensely strong, it’s hard to say what this will mean for him, Superman, and the future of everything.
We’ve seen magic is real in this universe, especially with Absolute Wonder Woman, but Black Adam doesn’t seem to have a natural connection to it. He’s incredibly powerful, often matching Superman, but that power comes from magic itself. However, King Shazam gets his abilities from the Father Box, and Superman is vulnerable to it, suggesting Black Adam and Superman might be more evenly matched than it seems. This makes me wonder what this means for the future of Absolute Shazam.
While there’s no proof the wizard doesn’t exist, it seems he didn’t grant Teth-Adam any powers. Usually, Black Adam’s story sets the stage for Billy Batson becoming Shazam. Removing the wizard could be a major setback for both characters, but it’s a significant change. We’ll have to see what other mysteries surround King Shazam to understand how this impacts future heroes with similar abilities.
