In the fresh season of ‘Peacemaker,’ John Cena’s character Chris Smith admits, ‘[I’ve had enough of being a joke].’ He longs for recognition as a true hero, not just a mercenary. However, in James Gunn’s revamped ‘Suicide Squad,’ Peacemaker was given an opportunity to demonstrate heroism alongside Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, and David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man. But instead of saving the day, Peacemaker unfortunately ended up taking down a hero himself-Task Force X leader Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman.
At Amanda Waller’s command to hide U.S. government links with Project Starfish and the menacing alien entity Starro, Peacemaker was forced to eliminate Col. Flag when he aimed to expose the truth to the media. Later, Bloodsport dispatched Peacemaker, leading the rest of Task Force X off-course, where they valiantly rescued Corto Maltese from Starro’s grasp.
Even after preventing another alien peril from devastating the planet, Chris feels that absolution is impossible in his reality and flees to an alternate universe. In this new world, Chris discovers that the Peacemaker is a member of a crime-fighting team alongside his father (Robert Patrick) and brother (David Denman). The parallel dimension’s version of the Peacemaker, known as the Parallel Peacemaker, shares a past with Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), the love Chris yearned for in his universe. Intriguingly, we come to know that Emilia is currently involved with someone called “the jarhead” in this alternate Earth.
Fans speculate that, in an alternate universe, Flag Junior might still be alive despite being deceased in the main DCU. It’s also plausible that a parallel version of Rick Flag Jr., instead of serving in the Army, could have been part of the United States Marine Corps.
In this alternative reality, it’s imaginable that the Smith family continues to play heroic roles as the Top Trio. This leads us to consider that Peacemaker avoided imprisonment, never joined the Suicide Squad, and did not murder Flag Junior.

One fan speculated on platform X that ‘Jarhead’ from the other dimension could possibly be Rick Flag Junior. Another fan expanded on this theory, suggesting, ‘Given that Alternate Earth Harcourt is currently with a military man, what are the odds it’s Rick [Flag] Jr? This would be significant for Chris, and not only for Rick Senior. A shared connection between them, something Chris may regret and Rick detests.’
Peter Sollett, the director of the movie “Need I Say More” (written by Gunn), hinted on his Instagram post in 2024 that Kinnaman could reprise his role. The post tagged the actor and included the Peacemaker cast members.
I’m not sure what I can say. That sounds absurd! I would never do that. I would never appear on such a series. It’s just not my style.” (Wink, wink.)
Is there a chance that Rick Flag Jr. survives in the alternate dimension? Might John Kinnaman reappear in future episodes? Share your opinions below. The second season of ‘Peacemaker’ airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Max.
