Supergirl now has such advanced armor, it’s comparable to Iron Man’s suit, effectively eliminating her weakness to kryptonite. While the DC Universe is full of brilliant inventors like Mr. Terrific and Batman, many comic fans immediately think of Iron Man when it comes to high-tech gadgets. Tony Stark’s creations are legendary, ranging from his famous armor to incredibly unique devices like a portable disintegrator. However, despite how impressive Stark’s inventions are, other comic book characters are just as inventive and resourceful.
Take Lena Luthor, for example – she’s the daughter of Superman’s famous enemy, Lex Luthor. Since reappearing, she’s demonstrated impressive creativity and intelligence, becoming a key character on Supergirl. While Supergirl is capable of handling threats on her own, Lena’s inventions have consistently been a valuable asset. Now, with her newest creation, Lena is pushing boundaries, developing something that could potentially protect all Kryptonians from their biggest vulnerability.
DC Debuts New Kryptonite Armor (And Tony Stark Would Be Proud)

I’m really enjoying the current Supergirl run, especially issue #10! It’s so relatable to see Lena trying to apologize to Kara after her attempt at a ‘Kryptonian happy hour’ went a little wrong. But poor Kara’s actually on a date, and things seem to be going great! What’s not so great is that she’s being subtly manipulated – her date is using kryptonite hidden in an earring to make her fall for him! It’s a clever and worrying situation, but thankfully Lena and her friend Luma are on the case and watching out for her.
Right when Kara’s date figures out she’s Supergirl, Lena steps in and identifies the earring he’s wearing as a rare type of pink kryptonite. With no time to waste, Lena pulls the earring out and gives it to Luma. However, this isn’t just any kryptonite – it’s been taken over by a Kryptonian spirit named Nela-Nar, who is fixated on love and determined to help other Kryptonians find it, even if they don’t want her help. Lena then creates a distraction so Kara can transform into Supergirl and also gives her a new device Lena has built.
Lena calls the suit her ‘anti-kryptonite’ armor. It shields the wearer from all types of kryptonite, but only for around three minutes because it drains power quickly. A unique feature is a dial that lets the user select which specific type of kryptonite to defend against, as the suit can only handle one at a time. Kara uses it, setting the dial to protect against pink kryptonite, and battles Nela-Nar. With help from Luma and Lena, the suit lasts long enough for them to successfully capture the villain, who is dangerously obsessed with love.
Supergirl’s Armor is a Cool Spin on Superman’s Newest Power
You might remember Superman recently gaining a temporary immunity to kryptonite – it lasts about three minutes. However, only Clark Kent has that ability naturally. That’s what makes Lena Luthor’s new invention so impressive. It gives Supergirl – or anyone who wears it – the same power. Plus, Lena’s armor works against all types of kryptonite, not just the usual green kind. Remarkably, she even accounted for pink kryptonite, despite never having encountered it before.
We don’t often think about armor for the Super Family, but I think it’s a great idea. With so many villains using kryptonite or similar materials – like Metallo, Reactron, and the Kryptonite Man – and kryptonite being more readily available on Earth (especially in Superman Unlimited), even regular criminals can pose a threat to Kryptonians. It just makes sense for Supergirl to have a way to protect herself, particularly against unusual enemies like Nela-Nar.
Recently, Tony Stark hasn’t been involved in any of the Marvel/DC team-ups, leaving fans wondering if Iron Man will ever appear in the DC Universe. However, Supergirl has Lena Luthor, who’s created something that feels like it could have come from Stark himself, given enough time and resources. Hopefully, we’ll see more of this technology in the future, as the DC Universe is a dangerous place, even for powerful heroes like Supergirl.
