The Joker is one of the most recognizable villains ever created. Originally appearing as a cold and calculating criminal, he’s consistently reinvented himself to fit any story. He’s been portrayed as a darkly humorous killer, a villain motivated by greed, and a chaotic force dedicated to destruction. Despite these shifts in personality and goals, his core skills have remained consistent – until recently, when DC Comics reintroduced a particularly frightening aspect of his character.
The Joker once cleverly tricked the powerful fifth-dimensional imp, Mister Mxyzptlk, into giving him almost all of his power. Calling himself Emperor Joker, he then used this cosmic ability to reshape the entire universe to match his twisted vision. Because Mxyzptlk’s powers were based on imagination, the Joker effectively controlled all of reality. Superman was only able to defeat him by using the Joker’s obsession with Batman against him, and thankfully, the Joker lost his reality-warping abilities. Everyone believed he’d gone back to being a regular criminal, but the comic DC K.O. #3 surprisingly brought Emperor Joker back with all his madness intact.
An Emperor Returned to His Malignant Throne

Following a series of deadly battles, only eight competitors remained for the third round. Without allowing them any recovery time, the Heart of Apokalips announced the quarter-finals would be team-based. Each competitor could choose a previously eliminated fighter as their partner, but Joker, having generated the most Omega Energy, had the unique ability to select someone from any point in time and space. Once the teams were formed, they were divided into four groups and instructed to fight to the death. Joker’s opponents were the skilled magician Zatanna and her partner, John Constantine. Joker then revealed his partner was someone who shared his sense of humor, and the Batman Who Laughs materialized beside him.
Even though they were facing an evil Batman, the two magicians still had the upper hand. They would have easily won if it had been the Batman Who Laughs. However, in a shocking turn of events, Joker revealed his partner was actually the mischievous imp, Mister Mxyzptlk. Mxyzptlk just wanted to escape and quickly end the fight, so he gave his powers to Joker. This allowed Joker to become the Emperor Joker, practically immune to the magicians’ spells, securing an immediate victory. Joker then drove them to insanity by making everything they saw a poisonous hallucination. They succumbed to madness, and Joker ironically killed Zatanna by casting a spell backwards.
An Old Mirror to Superman’s Soul

Emperor Joker’s appearance in DC K.O. is a tribute to DC’s entire history, but it’s also a deep exploration of Superman’s character. The original storyline pushed Superman to his moral breaking point. He’s always refused to take a life, but stopping the Joker seemed impossible without doing just that. Even Batman, after years of suffering, felt the Joker deserved to die. However, killing him wasn’t the solution. The only way to win was to appeal to the Joker’s own will and convince him to surrender, which ultimately happened. Superman’s victory wasn’t about strength, but about his unwavering heroism and compassion.
The stakes are incredibly high – reality itself is on the line – and Superman is once again being pushed to his limits. With each challenge, he becomes more and more consumed by rage and a desperate need to win. He’s even starting to fight like his enemy, Darkseid, and revel in his victories. This entire competition feels like a cruel test of character, meant to corrupt even the noblest heroes. It’s mirroring the situation with the Emperor Joker, where the only path to success seemed to be sacrificing one’s own morality. Superman faces the same terrible choice, but this time, he might not be strong enough to resist the temptation of darkness.
From the very beginning, “The Heart of Apokolips” showed us this competition was unfair. The contestants believe they need to become like Darkseid to win, but that’s a mistake. Superman is the only one who can find a different path to victory, and he needs to do it quickly, or the world could be lost to Darkseid forever.
