Two iconic superheroes – Batman and Superman – are adored globally, and their camaraderie is equally legendary. Despite their distinct personalities, they share a common goal of making the world a better place through heroism. Their collaborations are always a joy to witness, and Mark Waid’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest not only offered an outstanding joint comic series but also introduced one of their most intriguing developments yet. In issue #4, the Dark Knight and Man of Tomorrow merged their resolve to tear a mind-controlled Green Lantern’s ring off his finger, inadvertently creating the Green Light-powered Superbat. Although he only lasted for the rest of that issue, DC has now reintroduced him, and he remains as cool as ever since his initial appearance.
Leaguers Lost in Time
The dramatic occurrences during DC’s “We Are Yesterday” series significantly disrupted the flow of time within the DC Universe. Grodd’s unsuccessful bid to harness the residual Omega Energy left by Darkseid led to its widespread dissemination across the entire timeline, causing chaos and instability. This event trapped numerous heroes from different eras in the present, and halted all known methods of time travel, leaving them stranded until they could devise a solution. The unpredictable ripple effects included instances where the displaced heroes were either sent away or replaced by other heroes during unexpected temporal disturbances, dubbed “timequakes.” This alteration was evident at the onset of issue #9 in Justice League Unlimited, as the “Zero Year” Batman was replaced with Superbat, a rather unconventional character.
To stop the impending danger caused by Omega Energy and prevent a catastrophic timeline collapse, Time Trapper and World Forger came to extract information from Grodd. However, the Justice League Unlimited took issue with their violent approach towards Grodd, so they intervened to oppose them. Entering the fray was Superbat, whose formidable abilities stemmed from combining Batman’s skills, Superman’s powers, and Green Lantern’s constructs. He summoned a colossal green blade and charged in, but even Superbat’s immense might paled in comparison to Time Trapper and World Forger. They erected a barrier to keep the entire League at bay, while Grodd pleaded that instead of killing him, they should listen to what he had to say about Omega Energy based on his personal experience with it. Just as Grodd was successfully persuading them, Supergirl broke through the floor from below, bypassing their shield since it didn’t extend underground.
Regrettably, the timequakes worsened significantly. In place of Superbat, it was Jean Paul-Valley’s Batman that took over, but he was soon succeeded by Amazing-Man. Meanwhile, Supergirl attempted to capture Grodd, but all the different versions of her across the years seemed to collapse inwardly. Time Trapper and World Forger decided it was time to depart, taking Grodd with them, which temporarily halted the timequakes. The League prepared to pursue, but first needed to assess who was still present. After the dust settled, there were five heroes displaced in time remaining at the Watchtower, along with two mysterious figures who slipped away amidst the commotion.
