DC Just Gave Harley Quinn Back Her Best Costume (But Will it Stick Around?)

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see Harley Quinn revisiting one of her iconic outfits that turned heads back then. Once a villain and the Joker’s sidekick, Harley has transformed her image and stepped into the limelight as a hero, leaving her dark past behind. No longer clashing with Batman, she’s become an honorary member of the Bat-Family, even lending a hand to the Justice League on various missions. You could say she’s versatile when it comes to fashion, and now she’s returning to a costume that holds significant value in DC’s rich history.

WARNING: Spoilers for Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2 #3 below.

Justice League vs. Titans Showdown #3, penned by Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero, and Tyler Smith’s ComicCraft

This is the second collaboration between the DC Universe and Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Four years have passed since Godzilla made his debut, causing chaos in San Francisco during the 2014 film, Godzilla. In this issue, we find Harley Quinn conversing with a doctor on a couch. Although it may seem surprising that she’s discussing matters with Dr. Harleen Quinzel from an alternate universe, the real shocker is her wearing her costume from DC’s New 52 era.

Harley Quinn Returns to Her New 52 Costume

To keep Dr. Harleen Quinzel unaware of her real identity, Harley Quinn decides to call herself “Wunderfrau.” She confides in Dr. Quinzel about her complex relationship with the Joker, describing him as “my eternal soulmate, the love of my life… and my constant adversary.”

Following an unfortunate encounter that led to Amanda Waller’s death at the hands of Colonel Leland Lafayette Shaw III, Harley Quinn and Task Force X (the Suicide Squad) found themselves transported to the MonsterVerse Earth. However, matters took a turn for the worse, prompting Harley to seek assistance from the Justice League rather than dwelling on their current situation. With the Justice League now involved, it’s essential that Harley returns to headquarters as soon as possible.

In issue #3 of Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2, Harley Quinn’s appearance showcases her costume from Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner’s New 52 run on Harley Quinn. She maintains her iconic red and black color scheme, but the jester suit she wore in Batman: The Animated Series has been updated with a more contemporary design. Gone is the vibrant hair color, replaced by blonde tresses. While she still exposes some skin, it’s minimal compared to her previous outfits. Her top and bottom are both red and black, matching her sneakers and knee-high socks. Her jacket also features a red side and a black side.

As a devoted Harley Quinn enthusiast, I’ve seen her transformation across comics, TV shows, and movies – each version bringing something unique to the table. In the thrilling clash of titans depicted in Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2 #3, Harley sported an outfit reminiscent of her appearance on the adult-animated Harley Quinn series airing on HBO Max. The fifth season of this hilarious show came to a close in the spring, and as of now, no news about a sixth season has been released.

In a charming manner, DC views Harley Quinn as an essential foundation of the DC Universe, alongside heavyweights like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This might take some by surprise, but there’s no arguing with Harley Quinn’s widespread appeal. Margot Robbie has breathed life into Harley Quinn on the silver screen, and fans eagerly anticipate her major role in James Gunn’s fresh take on the DC Universe. Fingers crossed, we might see a reintroduction of Harley Quinn donning her New 52 outfit.
