DC Just Gave Us Their Best New Team in Years & Every Superman Fan Will Want More of Them

One of the most enjoyable aspects of shared comic book universes is seeing superhero teams come together. Groups like the Justice League, the Avengers, and the Teen Titans allow heroes to interact and tackle challenges too big for any one of them to face alone. While DC Comics has always had strong team representation, particularly through the Justice League and its expanded roster, smaller, more focused teams offer a unique and appealing dynamic. Now, DC has addressed this with the introduction of the “Terrific Ten.”

If you enjoyed James Gunn’s Superman movie, you’ll definitely want to check out the new DC team! It’s led by Mister Terrific, who was a standout character in the film. With the main Justice League busy fighting Darkseid in the “K.O.” event, Mister Terrific gathers nine heroes from different time periods to tackle a new threat and save the world in Justice League Unlimited #12. This team is exactly what fans have been hoping for, and we’re eager to see more adventures with them.

The Terrific Team Destined For Hell

In the world of DC K.O., major Justice League members are battling to become the next King Omega, while the rest of the team focuses on a desperate plan to evacuate Earth. Their efforts are complicated by Neron, the ruler of Hell, who’s boosting the powers of lesser-known villains, turning them into formidable threats with the promise of refuge in Hell if they create enough havoc. As heroes fall left and right, Mister Terrific realizes the only solution is to go straight to the source and defeat Neron. He begins by gathering nine heroes displaced from different time periods, all stranded in the present due to the events of “We Are Yesterday.”

Mr. Terrific explained the shocking truth: the heroes weren’t the original versions, but rather copies created when the timeline nearly fell apart due to Darkseid’s invasion. Despite this, he believed they were all true heroes at heart and would still fight for what’s right, even knowing they weren’t who they thought they were. He shared the dangerous plan to defeat Neron, warning them the mission was likely a one-way trip. Even if they survived, they would disappear once the timeline was restored. He then gave them a few hours to get ready.

The heroes each took time to mentally prepare for what lay ahead. Guy visited Ice, only to learn about their breakup, leaving him heartbroken. Aquaman discovered he had a daughter through a visit to his alternate self’s quarters and a conversation with Martian Manhunter. Owlwoman, Doctor Fate, and Gold Hawk found common ground in their feelings of displacement and longing for home. Power Girl left a message for her other self, encouraging her to overcome anger and find inner peace. After these personal moments, the heroes united and journeyed down into Hell.

A Team With Nothing to Lose (& Free to Be Anything)

This team is really promising. It finally puts Mister Terrific in the leading role, allowing him to shine as a leader and demonstrate his full potential – he’s a fantastic character who hasn’t gotten enough attention until now. The team roster itself is also exciting; it features versions of classic Justice League heroes, including some lesser-known favorites and fresh interpretations of established characters.

The team features some fantastic versions of classic heroes – like Aquaman with a hook for a hand, a blue-suited Superman, and a Green Lantern inspired by the Kingdom Come design. But what really makes this team special isn’t just the characters themselves, it’s the idea that they’re all future copies of the original heroes, aware that success means their own demise. This creates instant drama and gives the writers complete freedom to tell a unique story, essentially using versions of these heroes unburdened by established continuity.

The Terrific Ten are similar to the Suicide Squad, but instead of being forced into dangerous missions, they bravely choose to risk everything to be heroes. The team is full of compelling characters, and the story really delves into what each member is feeling. It’s a great combination, especially with a high-stakes mission like taking on the devil himself! While the team knows their time is limited, they’re incredibly fun to watch, and I hope we see more of them in the future.
