In the DC Universe, they’ve found their Superman, but there’s yet to be a Batman. It’s unlikely that Robert Pattinson will play the role, as James Gunn plans to keep his Batman series in its own distinct universe, separate from crossovers. This leaves an opportunity open for a new Dark Knight. When James Gunn and Peter Safran shared their plans for DC, they mentioned “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” Though the project is still far off with no casting decisions made yet, preparations are being made. As for a hint about upcoming developments, there might be some mild spoilers from the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2.
In the first episode of Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” there are two clear nods to Batman. Apart from the new character Sasha Bordeaux (played by Sol RodrĂguez), who in the comics is Bruce Wayne’s bodyguard and discovers his secret identity as Batman, it’s yet unclear if this connection will appear in the DCU. However, two other references to Batman are indisputable.
- Firstly, a report on The Sphere News references metahumans breaking out of âBelle Reve and Arkham.â
- Secondly, when Chris Smith sees the alternate version of Keith, his brother says: âI thought you were in BlĂŒdhaven.â
What Arkham & BlĂŒdhaven Being Canon Means For The DCUâs Batman
In simpler terms, Superman’s world (DCU) was hinted at in Gotham City through an Easter egg, and the TV show Peacemaker expands on this universe by introducing a place called Arkham. This suggests that many Batman villains already exist within this universe, as Arkham is often associated with them. One of the DCU movies set for release in 2026 is about Clayface, a character who typically appears as a villain alongside Batman. Given this, it’s plausible that Clayface might end up in Arkham by the end of his movie.
In my perspective, BlĂŒdhaven was alluded to in this universe before, nestled within the DCU’s network, as hinted in the comic series “Creature Commandos.” Yet, its appearance on the live-action stage adds a tangible layer to its reality. Although it surfaces in an alternate universe in “Peacemaker,” one of its trailers refers to this dimension as identical to ours. This, coupled with Creature Commandos, suggests that BlĂŒdhaven might be part of the main DCU.
If Gunn proceeds with his plans for “The Brave and the Bold,” it will feature Batman and his son Damian Wayne, who assumes the role of Robin in this story. This implies that another Robin, Dick Grayson, has moved on from the Batcave by then, as he operates out of BlĂŒdhaven under the identity of Nightwing. By introducing this development early on, it helps to create a sense of depth and realism within the DC Universe.
The storyline aligns with Gunn’s approach to the DC Universe thus far, where Superman bypassed Kal-El’s origin and disclosed that metahumans have inhabited Earth for three centuries. Characters such as Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific are already in action, so it seems reasonable to adopt a similar approach to worldbuilding when dealing with Batman. Although we might need to wait a few years until Batman appears in the DCU’s Gotham City, the second season of Peacemaker brings us closer.
Enjoy the premiere of “Peacemaker” Season 2 right now on HBO Max! Fresh episodes air every Thursday at 9pm Eastern Time.
