Even after many years, fans are still learning surprising things about the Speed Force, the mysterious energy source that powers the Flash and all other speedsters in the DC Universe. While everyone knows it’s what gives them their super speed, its true nature and how it connects to the Flashes remains a mystery. Attempts to study it by heroes like Wally West have been difficult because the Speed Force is constantly changing, leading many to give up on fully understanding it.
In the world of DC Comics, Darkseid’s forces are attacking the Speed Force – the source of power for speedsters like the Flash. In the DC K.O. tie-in comics, they aim to erase the Speed Force entirely, preventing any speedster from ever existing, and they’re specifically targeting Barry Allen to stop his origin story. Now, it’s up to Wally and Bart Allen to defend the Speed Force, and they’re about to uncover a shocking secret that will change everything they thought they knew about being a speedster.
The Flash Family is All Just Different Representations of the Speed Force

In The Flash #29, Wally West rushes to rescue Barry Allen, arriving just in the nick of time. However, the Darkseid Legion quickly follows. While Flash manages to protect young Barry, Lightning Lad unexpectedly takes a hit meant for him, which creates a problem with the timeline. As a result, Wally—and later Bart—begin to lose their connection to the Speed Force, causing them to lose their super speed and become ordinary humans.
Bart Allen, also known as Impulse, shows up to help and suddenly sees a vision of Jay Garrick. Jay tells Bart that the Speed Force – the source of their powers – is still within him, and he can reactivate it. Overwhelmed by bright yellow energy, Bart begins to speak as if he is the Speed Force itself. He explains to Wally that they are all, like Wally, simply different expressions of the same powerful force. While they each operate as independent heroes, they are all connected through the Speed Force. Using this newfound power, Bart restores Wally and Barry’s speed, and fixes the timeline.
The Speed Force isn’t Just a Power Source, It’s the True Face of the Flash

Impulse hits the nail on the head: the different identities of the speedsters don’t really matter. Each Flash is fundamentally the same – simply a different person connected to the Speed Force. They’re all individuals, but also represent a single, incredibly powerful force in the DC Universe. This realization strengthens the already close bond within the Flash Family.
