The world of Wonder Woman is entering a new era, beginning with the unexpected deaths of two major DC heroes. Readers of the main Wonder Woman comic know Diana recently defeated the Sovereign, a hidden ruler of America, with help from her allies. But that victory was only the first part of a larger story. The current Wonder Woman series hints at a troubling future, where the Sovereign’s protégé seeks revenge for her father’s downfall.
In the recent issue of Wonder Woman #25, readers were introduced to Lyssa, also known as the Matriarch. She’s the daughter of both the Sovereign and an Amazon named Emelie. Though currently a baby, Lyssa is destined to become a powerful conqueror who will take over the DC Universe. She plans to build an army and overthrow the U.S. government, and she’s even capable of defeating and killing many of the Justice League’s most powerful heroes, leaving very few standing. In this dark future, no hero is safe from the Matriarch, as two popular characters recently discovered.
Jon Kent and Damian Wayne’s Deaths Kick Off the Wonder War

In Wonder Woman #31, Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles jump twenty years into the future of the DC Universe. Metropolis, once protected by Superman, is now ruled by the Matriarch. Lex Luthor is still alive and plotting as usual. Despite publicly submitting to the Matriarch, he secretly teams up with Elizabeth Marston Prince, Jon Kent, and Damian Wayne – the children of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – to assassinate her. It’s a dangerous plan, but they believe it’s the only way to defeat Lyssa.
As Lyssa gets ready for her celebration, the heroes finalize their dangerous plan to eliminate the Matriarch. Trinity crafts a bow from the Lasso of Truth, and they strategize how she’ll deliver the final blow while Batman and Superman create a distraction. They pause, acknowledging the plan could lead to the deaths of people Lizzie has known all her life, but they continue forward. The ceremony starts, and Lex moves towards Lyssa with the God Killer Sword, but Damian unexpectedly arrives, disrupting everything.
It was absolutely brutal! Damian was battling Lyssa with his sword when Jon showed up, desperate to grab Lyssa’s Green Lantern ring. Meanwhile, Lizzie was patiently lining up the perfect shot at the Matriarch. But then Luthor betrayed everyone, and the assassination attempt completely fell apart. In the confusion, the Matriarch revealed her ring wasn’t a normal Power Ring – it was kryptonite! She used it to weaken Superman and actually stabbed him! Seeing that, Damian just lost it, and Lyssa seized the opportunity to impale him. It was heartbreaking watching Trinity run off, completely devastated by the sacrifices of her closest friends.
Batman and Superman’s Deaths and the Wonder War

While Jon and Damian’s deaths don’t affect the present day, and this future isn’t certain, it still deeply impacts Trinity. Jon and Damian were like brothers to Elizabeth, having often cared for her when she was young. In a world already filled with loss, this is the most devastating blow Elizabeth has experienced because of the Matriarch.
Despite the losses, the team’s plan worked. They secretly replaced the God Killer Sword with a copy, and Damian pretended to attack Lyssa with the fake weapon to trick the Matriarch into believing she still had the real one. Now, Wonder Woman has the sword, and although she might not survive her fight with the Matriarch, there’s a good chance Trinity can ultimately use it to defeat Lyssa.
It’s true that deaths in comics often don’t feel meaningful, and these deaths for Jon and Damian probably won’t have lasting effects beyond this story. But they do matter here. Beyond the emotional impact on Trinity and fueling her conflict with the Matriarch, their sacrifice gave Lizzie and Wonder Woman access to powerful weapons. While it’s uncertain if the God Killer Sword will ultimately defeat the Matriarch, the fact that future Batman and Superman died to obtain it suggests their sacrifice will be worth it and will play a role in what happens next.
