James Gunn’s Superman is packed with powerful performances, swiftly introducing characters that leave viewers eager for more. One standout character from the film is Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, a member of the Justice League who plays a pivotal role in assisting Lois Lane and Superman at different stages throughout the plot. Mister Terrific garnered a lot of love from fans, which could be why DC Studios might be considering leveraging this enthusiasm. In fact, on X (previously known as Twitter), user Caleb Williams, the editor-in-chief of Knight Edge Media, pointed out that DC filed a copyright for a Mister Terrific movie on July 16th, mere days after Superman hit theaters.
Certainly, just because a “Mister Terrific” movie isn’t about to happen right away doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be made. In another conversation, Williams pointed out that studios often register copyrights for potential projects that might not ever get off the ground. For instance, “Gotham City Sirens,” which was once in development as part of the DC Extended Universe, is a case in point where a project didn’t end up materializing.
Emphasizing that owning a copyright doesn’t guarantee a project will be produced, there were numerous copyright submissions during the Snyder era which ultimately didn’t materialize, such as Gotham City Sirens.

In the aftermath of Superman’s achievement, it seems Mister Terrific is a character of significant interest for DC Studios co-heads Gunn and Safran as they map out the future of the DC Universe. Previous speculations suggested that Gunn was contemplating television spinoffs for Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen. Recently, Gathegi himself expressed his thoughts on the TV show rumors, expressing a fondness to return to the role, but understanding that if it doesn’t materialize, it might be beneficial for the overall narrative.
In upcoming DC Universe projects like “Peacemaker” Season 2 and “Lanterns”, fans can look forward to seeing Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, but aren’t sure when Mister Terrific will reappear. Actor Elyes Gathegi, who plays Mister Terrific, has confirmed he has a multi-project deal with DC Studios, although his return isn’t imminent. Since James Gunn prefers to start production only after a script is completed, the details of Gathegi’s deal are unclear at this point. The actor acknowledges that his future in the DC Universe depends on the efforts of others, particularly the screenwriters.
Mister Terrific is yet another character brought to prominence by Gunn, transforming an underdog comic book hero into a fan favorite. There’s definitely excitement about the prospect of this character leading his own project. A series or movie centered around Mister Terrific would be fantastic for further developing one of Superman’s intriguing sidekicks and providing more insight into the DC Universe as a whole. A spin-off focusing on Mister Terrific could offer an opportunity to delve deeper into the Justice Gang and their enigmatic leader, Maxwell Lord. Although Superman stands well on its own narrative-wise, it leaves some mysteries unsolved, such as the nature of the Justice Gang and Lord’s reasons for funding a superhero team. Additionally, this could be an excellent chance to explore Mister Terrific’s heartbreaking past – something that Superman didn’t have much time to address.
While it’s thrilling to imagine a movie starring Mister Terrific, fans should temper their expectations. DC is simply ensuring they have the copyright secured for future use, given that there’s no creative team or immediate plans for such a film. In contrast, projects like Wonder Woman and The Brave and the Bold are currently in development, and James Gunn is working on a Superman sequel as well. It’s possible that Mister Terrific may make an appearance in this upcoming Superman sequel, leveraging the comedic chemistry between these two characters.
