As a huge DC fan, everyone knows them for superheroes, right? But what I really love is how they aren’t afraid to play with different types of stories *within* that world. They’re amazing at classic superhero tales, but they also dive into stuff like mystery, romance, and, my personal favorite, horror! Back in the day, DC really made a name for itself with scary comics – runs like Alan Moore’s *Saga of the Swamp Thing* and *John Constantine, Hellblazer* were just incredible. And it wasn’t just those main books; they had tons of other horror-themed stories and alternate takes. It was cool because these stories showed a different side of the DC universe, giving us darker, creepier tales while still keeping those familiar superhero elements that we all love.
DC Comics used to publish a lot of scary horror comics, but that’s been happening much less lately. While I’m a big fan of traditional superhero stories, I think it’s time DC brought back the chills and monsters of its horror past. And they already have the ideal character to lead the way: Martian Manhunter. He’s the perfect hero for a new wave of superhero-horror, and here’s why.
Nobody Escapes This Manhunter
J’onn J’onzz, also known as the Martian Manhunter, first appeared in *Detective Comics* #225 as an alien detective who quietly used his powers to solve crimes. Before joining the Justice League, he’d seen the worst of humanity while investigating many murders. Like the detective John Constantine – who blends magic with trickery – Martian Manhunter is well-suited for horror stories. Horror often builds fear by revealing evil slowly, and J’onn’s skills as a detective position him perfectly for that. As one of the last surviving Martians, J’onn is always an outsider, constantly shapeshifting to fit in. The most effective horror features things that don’t belong, and J’onn, living among us but always feeling separate, is uniquely equipped to uncover them.
The Martian Manhunter has found success in horror-mystery stories, as seen in *Absolute Martian Manhunter*. This approach presents him as a spirit working with a detective to solve mysteries and confront the darkness within people. Even a more traditional Martian Manhunter series could explore similar themes – his psychic abilities and feelings of isolation are perfect for creating a chilling atmosphere. In fact, his very first appearance on Earth was so frightening it caused a heart attack, hinting at how powerfully he can explore the darker side of humanity and how we see the world.
A Man Who Can Battle Monsters
Traditional horror relies on a vulnerable main character facing a powerful threat, creating fear through constant danger. But superhero horror comics often feature heroes who are as strong, or stronger, than the villains they fight. This presents a challenge for characters like Martian Manhunter, who possesses Superman-level strength and detective skills comparable to Batman – it’s hard to create suspense when he’s so capable. Reimagining him as a true horror protagonist would solve this, allowing stories to focus on more subtle, psychological threats. A clever, unreadable serial killer could be scarier than a massive monster, though a well-crafted atmosphere could make both equally terrifying.
