Batman is famous for having a fantastic collection of villains, and the Joker is undoubtedly the most iconic. The Joker, also known as the Clown Prince of Crime, is arguably the most well-known supervillain ever created – his look, with white face paint, green hair, and a purple suit, is instantly recognizable. He’s Batman’s main enemy, and their conflict has been portrayed countless times in various forms of media. The Joker perfectly represents everything Batman fights against: selfishness, chaos, and madness. He’s been central to many of Batman’s greatest adventures, consistently challenging the hero like no other, which is both his greatest strength and his biggest flaw.
The Joker has become incredibly overexposed. There are too many mediocre stories featuring him, all trying to one-up his previous acts of villainy. What was once a brilliant and iconic villain has become predictable and relies too much on shocking moments. After years of dragging down Batman’s stories, however, the Joker is finally heading in a new and promising direction. The recent issue of Batman (2025) #7 revealed a fresh take on the character, and it’s the most engaging the Joker has been in a long time.
The Joker’s Trip to Sanity

Deep within Arkham Tower, Dr. Annika Zeller created a device intended to dramatically improve mental healthcare. Called the Crown of Storms, it aimed to correct chemical imbalances in the brain, reducing extreme reactions that cause severe mental illness. The Joker was her first patient. Renamed Patient Ten, he received the implant, and surprisingly, it worked. The device normalized his brain activity, restoring his sanity and allowing him to see his actions clearly for the first time.
The Joker felt remorse for everything he’d done and the hurt he’d inflicted on so many. He wished he could simply stay locked away, completely still, as a form of self-punishment. However, his criminal instincts remained, and he continued to gather information. When he heard about a new villain targeting Bruce Wayne, it piqued his interest. He contacted Batman to warn him about the threat, but he also had another reason for wanting to meet.
Even with a clearer mind, the Joker remained obsessed with Batman, who was the one consistent figure in his chaotic life. Batman was always there, relentlessly pursuing him. In the Joker’s warped state, he considered Batman the closest thing he had to a friend. Remembering his own past loneliness, the Joker wanted to connect with Batman, to offer companionship or guidance and prevent him from feeling the same isolation. This new version of the Joker, while still fundamentally the same character, represents something he’s always craved: a connection with another person.
A New Joker and a Brand New Purpose

For years, the Joker has been Gotham’s most notorious villain, but his impact feels overblown. He’s always sought grand schemes without truly understanding what makes a compelling story. Now, though, he’s changing. Instead of repeating old patterns, the Joker seems to be becoming a consistent ally – a development Batman understandably doesn’t trust. However, if the Joker maintains this new, more stable behavior, he genuinely might start helping Batman.
As predicted, the Joker can’t help but react to the changing criminal landscape of Gotham. Despite being a dangerous killer, he’s incredibly intelligent and has a unique understanding of crime. This makes him potentially helpful, leading Batman to cautiously seek his assistance, all while remaining deeply suspicious. The resulting partnership is a recipe for intense conflict and a truly awful working relationship – which is what makes it so compelling. I’m genuinely excited to see what the future holds for the Joker; his storylines hint at something new, and while he’ll likely return to being a villain eventually, a prolonged period of this unusual dynamic could be a refreshing change.
