It’s said that DC attempted to lure Kevin Feige away from Marvel Studios following the release of Justice League in 2008. At that time, Kevin Feige, who had previously worked on films like Spider-Man 3 and X-Men, proposed a groundbreaking concept: creating a unified superhero movie universe, with Iron Man serving as the starting point. Despite some production chaos, the film was successful and was later followed by The Incredible Hulk, which helped sow the seeds of crossover films through a post-credits scene featuring Robert Downey Jr. Feige would go on to produce movies such as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and of course, The Avengers.
Over the course of just four years, Marvel established itself as a powerful force within Hollywood, with its momentum continuing to grow in subsequent years as Feige constructed an extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe. Conversely, DC faced challenges in emulating this success. The films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were met with controversy and criticism respectively, earning nearly $900 million between them, yet still failing to captivate audiences. Studio executives intervened on various projects, leading to missteps that ultimately undermined DC’s prospects. In short, it was a chaotic period for DC, and Marvel stood out as the clear frontrunner. The disastrous reception of Justice League further exacerbated Warner Bros.’ concerns, prompting them to seek a leader who could steer the ship. As fate would have it, James Gunn eventually took on that role, overseeing a successful Superman reboot. Interestingly, other Marvel veterans also caught Warner Bros.’ attention in their search for stability.
DC Reportedly Tried to Hire Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige
Following the flop of “Justice League”, Warner Bros. reportedly held discussions with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about potentially leading DC’s film projects. However, the details of these conversations are vague, and it seems that they eventually ended without any significant progress. It’s speculated that Feige may have merely accepted the meeting out of politeness rather than seriously considering a move from Marvel. Given the appeal of such a position, it’s not surprising he would want to listen to their proposals.
Back then, I was pondering about winding down the Infinity Saga and perhaps moving on to guide a new universe – DC, maybe? It’s plausible that I had discussions with Warner Bros., but it seems like we couldn’t agree on certain aspects such as creative freedom, remuneration, or other key points. Regardless, it’s intriguing to learn that WB attempted to recruit me instead of looking for the next best talent in town.
It appears that James Gunn’s vision for DC is proving successful, while Kevin Feige continues his leadership at Marvel Studios, planning two large Avengers films scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027. This will mark another concluded saga within the MCU. As to whether Feige will step down after that remains uncertain. Over the years, veteran Marvel producers like Nate Moore have moved on, suggesting that some are ready for new challenges.
Nevertheless, Kevin Feige shows great enthusiasm about his role, suggesting he might continue leading the Marvel Cinematic Universe for an extended period. The idea of a Marvel and DC crossover on the big screen hasn’t been dismissed by him, given that Gunn now oversees DC productions. It seems this could be their next ambitious project.
