DC Reveals Why Poison Ivy and Harley Broke Up (And It Makes No Sense)

Following a surprising announcement last month, DC Comics has explained why Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn recently split up – and many fans likely won’t be pleased with the reason. DC is entering a new creative phase, dubbed the ‘Next Level,’ and is making big changes. After the events of DC K.O., the publisher is launching new series and making its existing titles more accessible to new readers. We’re seeing major shifts, like Aquaman exploring the cosmos and Superboy-Prime becoming a hero in Metropolis. Perhaps most surprisingly, Poison Ivy has achieved the seemingly impossible: she’s been elected mayor of Gotham City.

Poison Ivy, facing opposition from Gotham’s police commissioner Vandal Savage, decided to run for mayor to gain an advantage. Surprisingly, she won! Now in charge of Gotham, Ivy’s victory came at a cost: her relationship with Harley Quinn. This breakup upset many fans, and DC Comics has now explained what caused it – and unfortunately, the reason seems rather flimsy.

Poison Ivy’s New Job Drove Harley Quinn Away

The latest issue of Poison Ivy, #43, written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Jaime Infante, Arif Prianto, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, opens with a scene shortly after Ivy becomes mayor. We see a tense conversation between Ivy and Harley Quinn, with Harley upset and worried that Ivy no longer loves her. Ivy assures Harley that she does still love her, but this actually makes Harley more confused, as she believes love should be all that matters.

Things have changed now that Ivy is mayor. She explains to Harley that her position gives her real authority, which is currently protecting them from threats like Savage. Harley’s upset because she’s been trying to support Ivy by acting the part of the mayor’s wife – dressing nicely and being on her best behavior – but Ivy insists it’s not enough. Ivy assures Harley that her job isn’t more important than their relationship, but she needs to keep her position secure and can’t risk anything that might jeopardize it.

It finally hit me why things were so tense between Ivy and me. She was worried I’d be too unpredictable, too much of a ‘clown’ as I put it, and embarrass her at public events. She tried to reassure me, saying she wasn’t ashamed and that she loved everything about me, but I was too hurt to really hear it. I just walked out on her there in the Mayor’s office, and honestly, I think she spent weeks afterward trying to figure out what went wrong.

Optics Shouldn’t Be Enough to Tear Harley and Ivy Apart

I know it’s a potentially unpopular opinion, but I don’t mind seeing Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn’s relationship face challenges. Conflict is important for a good story, and it could have been compelling to see how Ivy’s demanding new job as mayor impacted their relationship. However, the way their breakup is handled feels rushed and weak. It would make more sense if Ivy’s work caused her to neglect Harley or if Harley found herself in real danger. Breaking them up simply because of how it looks just doesn’t feel believable or satisfying.

The story jumps ahead in time, and it doesn’t explain how Gotham City came to elect Poison Ivy as its leader, which is a bit of a stretch. While we can accept that for the sake of the plot, it feels odd that Harley Quinn is now considered a risk to Ivy’s political career. Ivy is already working with a former criminal in charge of the city’s development! I understand the story needs conflict between Harley and Ivy, but they just went through a breakup recently. It feels repetitive to revisit that conflict so quickly.

I understand why Ivy might be cautious with Vandal Savage as police commissioner, and why she’d worry about how the public perceives Harley. However, it feels like Harley’s presence wouldn’t really make a difference – people already know who both of them are and still elected Ivy. It seems unnecessary for anyone to have interfered, and I hope Ivy realizes this was a mistake and fixes things soon.
