James Gunn, the acclaimed director now leading DC Studios, has been incredibly busy working on projects like *Peacemaker*, *Superman*, and *Creature Commandos*. After quickly confirming the return of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor in the 2027 film *Man of Tomorrow*, Gunn recently discussed what’s next for him. Surprisingly, he revealed he’s been approached about directing the live-action *One Piece* series for Netflix, and considered the possibility of leading another team of adventurers.
James Gunn recently appeared on Nick Viall’s podcast, “The Viall Files,” where he explained why he doesn’t think he’d be the right person to adapt *One Piece*. He stated that he hasn’t read enough of the manga to truly understand what makes it so popular, unlike DC or Marvel characters with whom he’s very familiar. Gunn also pointed out that he often makes significant changes to characters he works with – like Peacemaker and the Guardians of the Galaxy – and feels more comfortable doing that with lesser-known properties.
The State of The Grand Line
Even though James Gunn probably won’t be directing a *One Piece* project in the near future, the series still looks very promising. The second season of the live-action *One Piece* on Netflix is scheduled for 2026, but we don’t have a firm release date yet. While the Straw Hat Pirates won’t immediately begin the Alabasta Arc – the storyline featuring characters like Ace and the desert kingdom of Alabasta – they’ll still face plenty of challenges.
Luffy and his crew will journey to places like Whiskey Peak, Reverse Mountain, Drum Island, Little Garden, and Loguetown in the upcoming episodes. Along the way, they’ll meet both friends and foes, and fans are especially excited about the introduction of Tony Tony Chopper. The reindeer doctor, brought to life with full CGI, will join the Straw Hats in season two, changing their adventures forever.
Both the manga and anime of *One Piece* are currently building towards the final storyline that will conclude Eiichiro Oda’s long-running series. While Oda often takes his time with each story arc, meaning we likely have a few more years of adventures ahead, the ending for Luffy and his crew is starting to come into view. Even after *One Piece* finishes, fans can still look forward to a planned anime reboot and the continuing live-action adaptation, which has plenty of material left to cover.
