DC Studios’ Jimmy Olsen Show Confirmed To Be a ‘Crime Mystery Comedy’ By Superman Spin-off Showrunner Dan Perrault (Exclusive)

Dan Perrault, co-showrunner of the upcoming Jimmy Olsen series from DC Studios, has revealed the show’s genre. Skyler Gisondo, who first played the endearing Daily Planet coworker of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the 2025 film Superman, will reprise his role in the new HBO Max series. Details about the show’s title and type of story it will tell have now been confirmed.

TopMob interviewed Dan Perrault at SXSW, where his film, Love Language, had its debut. Perrault also confirmed to TopMob that he and Tony Yacenda were co-showrunners for the Superman spin-off featuring Jimmy Olsen.

The writer shared that they’re still working on the official title for the spin-off series, and were brainstorming ideas as recently as last week. Early reports suggested the title DC Crime, but James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has confirmed that’s not the name.

TopMob asked about the upcoming Jimmy Olsen TV show, wondering if it will be titled ‘Daily Planet’ or something else entirely.

So, I’ve heard they’re still figuring out the official title – it’s something new they haven’t revealed yet. We were chatting about potential names last week, and honestly, there were a bunch we all really liked. But just to be clear, it definitely isn’t going to be called ‘Untitled Jimmy Olsen show,’ which is good, right?

Perrault then described how the Jimmy Olsen series would be different from typical superhero shows. He explained that it would be similar to other projects he and Yacenda have worked on, falling into the genre of a “crime mystery comedy.”

Tony Yacenda and I are very familiar with this kind of show – a crime mystery with comedic elements. We’ve been doing it for a long time, and we can bring some unique approaches to this superhero project that haven’t been seen before.

As someone who really enjoyed the clever, deadpan humor of American Vandal, I was excited to hear about this new show focusing on Jimmy Olsen. The creators, Perrault and Yacinda, are bringing that same mockumentary, true-crime parody style to the DC universe, and it’s going to be hosted by Gisondo playing Olsen himself. Apparently, the big bad for the first season is none other than Gorilla Grodd – a surprisingly inspired choice, and I’m already intrigued to see how they pull off a serious (but not too serious) take on that villain.

According to Perrault, the show is still being written, so it’s not yet known when it will be released as part of the DC Universe’s plans. James Gunn is already working on a second Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for July 9, 2027, and Gisondo might return to play his role in it.

Jimmy Olsen’s Show Will Add Another Genre to the DCU

So far, the DCU has launched three very different projects. Creature Commandos is an animated series for adults, Superman is a traditional superhero movie with a lighthearted feel, and Peacemaker is an R-rated action-comedy. In 2026, the DCU will continue to explore new types of stories, including a superhero space adventure (Supergirl), a horror story (Clayface), and a crime series following a pair of detectives (Lanterns).

The upcoming show about Jimmy Olsen will blend crime, mystery, and comedy, adding a fresh take to the DC Universe. Alex Gisondo really stood out as the charming Daily Planet photographer in Superman, unexpectedly becoming popular with fans. Since Olsen provided humor in Superman, it’s fitting that his own series will continue that comedic element, aligning with how the DCU uses different genres to showcase the personalities of its heroes.

The show will blend the sharp, satirical style of American Vandal with a more serious mystery and crime element. Olsen’s job as a photographer for Metropolis’s leading news source will naturally lead him to uncover crimes and investigate them, providing a strong foundation for the plot. This setup could also create opportunities for other Daily Planet reporters, such as Lois Lane and Perry White, to join his investigations.
