DC Studios Just Erased Ezra Miller’s Flash from Official Canon

During the premiere of Peacemaker‘s second season, director James Gunn confirmed that Ezra Miller’s Flash has been removed from the established storyline (canon) and will not reappear in the upcoming DC franchise. This announcement sparked curiosity among fans following James Gunn’s appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios and his decision to discontinue the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and launch a new universe called the DCU (DC Universe). Since Gunn also indicated that certain projects and characters, including Peacemaker and his series, would be continued in the DCU, fans were primarily interested in understanding how this transition would unfold.

Among the primary topics of discussion concerning the Justice League members arose particularly around Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash, given their cameo in Peacemaker Season 1. Yet, during Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn clarified that the Justice League’s involvement in Peacemaker has been revised in the storyline (retconned), effectively writing Miller’s Flash out of the DC Universe entirely.

In the recap montage that kicked off Season 2, Episode 1, where significant moments from the previous season were displayed, the Justice League was instead depicted as the Justice Squad.

Or, in another way:

At the start of Season 2, Episode 1, during the “Recap of Previous Events” montage, the characters that made up the Justice League were shown to have been switched with those belonging to the Justice Gang.

In this context, Miller’s Flash was swapped out for Isabela Merced’s portrayal of Hawkgirl, a character who made an appearance in Gunn’s Superman movie as well.

In contrast to characters such as Superman and Wonder Woman, who typically only appear in silhouette form during their initial introductions, the first season scene featured The Flash with his facial features clearly visible on-screen and delivering dialogues.

In the montage sequence during Season 2, a similar event occurred, but instead of Flash, we got a close-up shot of Merced’s Hawkgirl. Just like Flash, she engaged in conversation within that particular scene.

In this scene, it’s evident that the portrayal of Superman is David Corenswet’s version, not Henry Cavill’s. Interestingly, Nathan Fillion took on the role of Guy Gardner instead of Aquaman, Milly Alcock stepped in as Supergirl instead of Wonder Woman, and Edi Gathegi made a second appearance as Mr. Terrific.

In summary, Flash did not make an appearance or interact with Peacemaker during the season 1 finale events. The scene presented by Gunn at the beginning of season 2 suggests that the version of Flash portrayed by Miller is not part of the DC Universe’s official storyline (DCU) and will not be transferred from the DCEU (DC Extended Universe).

New episodes of Peacemaker debut every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.

Will Ezra Miller Ever Play Flash Again?

Many enthusiasts continue to hope that Zack Snyder’s cinematic universe might be resurrected at some point down the line. Yet, given what James Gunn has initiated, such a scenario appears highly improbable. Nevertheless, in this era of unpredictability, nothing can definitively be ruled out, so one cannot confidently assert that Snyder’s universe will never make a comeback again.

In this contemporary era, cameos appear to be quite common in comic book productions. As of now, it’s still too soon after Frank Miller played The Flash for a cameo to be expected. However, looking ahead, say within the next 10-15 years, there’s a strong possibility that Frank Miller might suit up once more and make a surprise appearance in a cameo.

At present, it can be inferred that Miller likely won’t play The Flash in the DC Universe. While Gunn hasn’t discussed the DCU’s Flash extensively, he did mention that the character will appear eventually, which isn’t unexpected.

On that day, it’s quite probable that the role of the “fastest man alive” will fall upon an individual who hasn’t taken on this role previously.
