It’s clear that the success of Superman in DC Studios has opened up opportunities for new projects within the DC Universe, and with James Gunn and others mapping out future plans, it could be Wonder Woman’s turn to shine next. An article in Variety highlights the positive impact of the reboot on the development of a new Wonder Woman movie. Despite David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan being contracted for a Superman sequel, it seems that other projects are currently taking precedence over another Superman film. Furthermore, there’s great anticipation surrounding Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II as well.
According to Variety’s report, it seems that Warner Bros. might not be planning to announce a sequel for Corenswet and Brosnahan’s movie anytime soon. Instead, the studio is focusing on speeding up the production of a Wonder Woman film. Additionally, they are excited about Matt Reeves’ recently submitted script draft for The Batman sequel.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve eagerly anticipated the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, following the remarkable success of Superman on the big screen. James Gunn, the mastermind behind this project, has confirmed its development. At present, the script is being crafted, yet no release date has been set as of now.
Gunn insists that production for any DC Studios venture will commence only when he’s content with a flawless script. In his recent words, patience is key in this creative process. He emphasizes that it’s better to invest time in refining the screenplay than to rush and compromise quality.
In the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman was a prominent character, played by Gal Gadot in six films, including an unaccredited role in the 2023’s “The Flash.” Over her time, she led two standalone movies; while the first one, released in 2017 as “Wonder Woman,” received praise from critics and was a box office hit, the second, “Wonder Woman 1984” in 2020, received much harsher reviews. Unfortunately, it’s not anticipated that Gadot will reprise her role in the upcoming DCU’s “Wonder Woman” film.
Following the blockbuster debut of Superman, it’s no wonder that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is talking about a 10-year plan for DC Studios. Guess who might be moving quickly? None other than Wonder Woman! James Gunn has hinted that she’s one of the key characters they’re focusing on, which makes me think she’s high on his list as he maps out the future of the DC Universe. It seems only logical for her to be the next lead in a DCU movie. The Batman sequel is set in its own continuity, so they might not want two simultaneous Batman franchises. As Matt Reeves continues his epic crime saga with The Batman Part II, Wonder Woman could help push the DCU forward while Gunn works out what’s next for the Caped Crusader. I can hardly wait!
While a new Wonder Woman film sounds thrilling, let’s hope Superman’s success doesn’t push the DCEU into deviating from Gunn’s method. The DCEU stumbled when it tried to hurry things up in an attempt to match Marvel’s pace. There’s definitely enthusiasm for characters like Wonder Woman and Batman to join Superman in the DC Universe, but it won’t be satisfying unless it’s well-executed. The franchise has a promising start, but it’s still young, so any mistake could derail its future direction. After experiencing a similar setback before, Warner Bros. would be prudent to stick with Gunn’s plan and not rush things before they’re ready.
