DC Studios Reportedly Shelves DCU Wonder Woman Spinoff Series

A planned Wonder Woman spin-off series has reportedly been cancelled. Originally announced in January 2023 as part of James Gunn’s first wave of DC Universe projects, the HBO Max series Paradise Lost won’t be moving forward. While Creature Commandos and Superman have already been released, and Supergirl and Lanterns are scheduled for this year, The Brave and the Bold is still in development. Currently, four other projects from that initial slate are facing difficulties at DC Studios.

On the latest episode of the Geek Buddies podcast, John Rocha reported that DC Studios has told writers who pitched ideas for the Wonder Woman spin-off, Paradise Lost, that the project is cancelled.

Originally, plans for the DC Universe didn’t include Wonder Woman right away. A series called Paradise Lost was intended as an HBO Max show, similar to Game of Thrones, focusing on the complex politics within a society of only women. The story would have been a prequel, exploring the history and beginnings of this society, set before Wonder Woman was even born.

DC Studios didn’t officially announce any writers or creative team members for the Paradise Lost series. However, Nexus Point News reported in July 2024 that Kira Snyder (known for The Handmaid’s Tale) and Janet Lin (Bridgerton) were being considered for the project.

There haven’t been many recent announcements about Paradise Lost, but in October 2024, James Gunn confirmed that work on the Wonder Man spin-off series was moving forward.

Though a writer for Paradise Lost hasn’t been officially announced, DC Studios revealed in July 2025 that Ana Nogueira, known for her work on Supergirl, will write the new Wonder Woman movie, taking over the role from Gal Gadot.

Just last August, Gunn said that both Wonder Woman and Paradise Lost were still in development, while also promoting the DCU projects that were closest to being finished. This suggests that a solo Wonder Woman movie wasn’t immediately planned to replace the HBO Max series, as some people thought.

When Will the DCU’s Wonder Woman Movie Happen?

Since DC Studios launched, many viewers questioned why a prequel about the history and inhabitants of Themyscira – the world of Wonder Woman – was being made before Wonder Woman’s own introduction. While DC Studios hasn’t explained why the project was cancelled, it’s likely James Gunn agreed with fan concerns about the order of releases.

Some fans have questioned DC Studios’ decision to focus on lesser-known heroes like Jimmy Olsen, Mister Miracle, Peacemaker, and the Creature Commandos before introducing its most popular characters.

It looks like the core heroes of the DC Universe – Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – are finally getting the team-up fans have been waiting for. James Gunn has plans to direct a sequel to the new Superman film, titled Man of Tomorrow, which is expected next year. Meanwhile, scripts are in development for both Batman’s first appearance in The Brave and the Bold, written by Christina Hodson, and a new Wonder Woman movie penned by Ana Nogueira.

It’s hard to say when Wonder Woman’s solo movie will be released, as it’s still being written. However, the screenwriter quickly got the script for this year’s Supergirl approved, which is a good sign that Wonder Woman’s movie could also move forward quickly.

The new Wonder Woman in the DC Universe will be a more cheerful and playful character compared to Gal Gadot’s version. The filmmakers are aiming for a tone similar to the more lighthearted and adventurous style of the Superman comics when introducing her in the upcoming reboot.

Wonder Woman could potentially appear in a live-action movie by 2028, as DC Studios doesn’t currently have any films scheduled for that year. While delays are common in the movie industry and plans could change, there’s a good possibility that casting for the role will begin either this year or next.

Now that a Justice League member has appeared in a film, DC Studios might explore the story of Paradise Lost and expand on the mythology of the Amazons with a series on HBO Max.
