A previous star from DC projects now aims to take on the role of Casey Jones in an upcoming live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. Elias Koteas portrayed the character known for using a hockey stick as a weapon and donning a mask, in the 1990 movie adapted from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s original comics. Since then, these comic books have led to the creation of “The Last Ronin,” envisioned as the final tale of the turtle quartet – Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Set in a potential apocalyptic future, The Last Ronin follows Mikey, the last surviving Turtle, on a quest for revenge for his deceased brothers.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the iconic ’90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turning 35! Kevin Eastman, one of the creators, has recently disclosed that Joe Manganiello – a renowned comic book lover known for his roles as Flash Thompson in Spider-Man and Slade Wilson in Justice League – has shown interest in stepping into the role of Casey Jones in a long-awaited sequel to the original movie set in more modern times. This potential collaboration could bring a fresh, action-packed spin to our beloved Turtles’ story!
In simpler terms, Eastman shared that he first connected with him due to their mutual love for Turtles, both the turtle creatures and the role-playing games based on them. They met online and continued their friendship over time. When discussions about a new live-action Turtles movie emerged, this individual expressed interest in playing Casey Jones in the remake. He even sent Eastman some photos to showcase his suitability for the role, as he was just the right age for it.
Joe Manganiello, aged 48, was initially set to have a more significant part as the masked assassin Deathstroke in the DC Extended Universe. First introduced in the post-credits scene of the 2017 film “Justice League,” Manganiello’s Deathstroke was later seen again in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” However, the Deathstroke character was intended for Ben Affleck’s unrealized Batman movie. Now that the DC universe has been rebooted, Manganiello expresses his desire to portray another well-known comic book character.
Eastman, earlier in discussions with ComicBook, hinted that the upcoming live-action version of “The Last Ronin” being developed by Paramount and Nickelodeon might possibly continue the storyline from the ’90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie series.
According to Eastman’s account from the discussions, despite being limited, there seems to be a common appreciation for the comic book Last Ronin. He describes it as a tribute to Frank Miller’s Dark Knight, particularly referring to The Dark Knight Returns from 1986, where Batman returns after a decade of retirement. Eastman explains that while all things Batman exist in Dark Knight Returns, the universe of Last Ronin is slightly different, allowing for more creative freedom and telling a standalone story without being bound by established rules or lineage.
In ‘The Last Ronin,’ we adopted a similar strategy as before, but it strongly references the Mirage Universe. Eastman explained that this comic series continuation features Michelangelo and Casey Marie Jones – daughter of Casey Jones and April O’Neil – with Mikey serving as her mentor. Unfortunately, Issue #3 reveals in a flashback that Casey perished alongside Leonardo in an explosion caused by the Turtles’ age-old adversary, Baxter Stockman.
In the upcoming sequel, titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution, penned by Eastman and Tom Waltz, Casey Marie takes the helm of a resistance alongside her students: Moja, Odyn, Uno, and Yi, who are the future generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
You can grab ‘The Last Ronin’ and its sequel, ‘The Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution,’ from IDW and any bookstore near you!
