The DC Comics Earth One graphic novel series didn’t get a chance to fully realize its potential, but the new DC Universe called Absolute Universe is making up for it quite well. DC Comics is famously known for their multiverse concept, where they have numerous parallel realities with different iterations of all their iconic heroes and villains like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. The multiverse allows for many new interpretations of these characters, one such example being the DC Earth One graphic novel series. This series offered fresh origin stories for DC’s Trinity, Green Lantern, and Teen Titans, but it seemed to have stopped with the third volume of Batman: Earth One in June 2021.
Although the demise of Earth-One doesn’t change the importance of the multiverse to DC Comics, the thriving parallel reality known as Absolute Universe demonstrates this perfectly. Similar to Earth-One, Absolute DC has revamped several iconic superheroes with new iterations, and there are more possibilities for characters within Absolute DC yet to be explored. To top it all off, the success of Absolute Universe mirrors the Elseworlds concept that Earth-One initially established, suggesting it could have reached the same heights as its predecessor.
DC Earth One Was an Elseworlds Comic Book Line With Great Potential
The fresh series, DC Earth One, made a captivating entrance into the comics world by proposing unique and engaging interpretations of DC’s heroes outside their traditional storylines, featuring entirely new backstories for each character. Although DC has previously explored alternate realities through Elseworlds stories, Earth One offered a thrilling journey into an alternate DC universe with revamped versions of every hero. For instance, Hal Jordan was transformed into a space mining astronaut, and General Zod became Superman’s uncle, among other changes to the mythology in each Earth One comic book. These books proved to be engaging reads due to their innovative twists on established characters.
Regrettably, one significant hurdle faced by DC Earth One was an inconsistent release schedule, causing new comics to appear months or even years apart on shelves. This led to a struggle in keeping the momentum high with extended pauses between new releases of each character’s series, dampening the enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding the graphic novel line. The potential termination of DC Earth One is indeed unfortunate, given its compelling narratives, artwork, and fresh perspectives on superhero and villain origins.
DC’s Absolute Universe is Going Even Wilder in Its Character Re-Imaginings
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share my thoughts on the difference between DC’s Earth One and Absolute Universe. While both offer fresh takes on our favorite DC characters, Absolute DC stands out by being more intertwined with the main comics continuity, springing from Darkseid’s energy.
Initially conceived, Absolute DC follows a similar blueprint as Earth One – a new universe, fresh origins stories for every character, and a complete reboot of everything DC-related. However, what sets Absolute Universe apart is its daring exploration of new directions for DC, pushing the boundaries even further than Earth One’s reimaginings.
In this All-Encompassing Cosmos, Batman has transformed into a muscular construction worker wielding an axe, while Wonder Woman was relocated from Themyscira to grow up amidst the turmoil of Hell. Superman is now a champion for the oppressed, donning a high-tech suit supported by artificial intelligence. Notably, Wally West is evading capture by the Rogues after acquiring his super-speed following what seemed like Barry Allen’s demise. Martian Manhunter has become an alien intellect housed within human detective John Jones’ mind, and a diverse array of Green Lanterns – both veteran and brand new – are making their debut in this All-Encompassing Universe. Each character in the All-Encompassing Universe is distinctly different from any previous incarnation, adding depth and excitement to the comic book series. Moreover, this universe-wide reinvention surpasses expectations by delivering a captivating reading experience and fulfilling something it had never promised before.
The Absolute Universe is Becoming the Phenomenon That DC Earth One Could Have Been
From its inception featuring characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, Absolute DC has truly transformed into a groundbreaking series for DC Comics and the entire comic book industry. Each title sells swiftly and consistently delights readers. Now in its second year, new heroes like Green Arrow are being added to the Absolute roster, while plans for the Absolute Universe continue to unfold. In essence, DC Comics is successfully aiming for a second success with the Absolute Universe, mirroring their goals for DC Earth One, with impressive outcomes.
A key element in the success of Absolute DC is its consistent publishing schedule, but equally crucial is its similarity to Earth One, amplifying the same Elseworlds concept. As the Absolute Universe gears up for heroes interacting in the upcoming crossover between Batman and Wonder Woman in Absolute Wonder Woman #15, it’s clear that the true reward of Absolute DC isn’t just anticipation for an Absolute Justice League, but rather the potential it showcases.
DC’s Absolute Universe builds on Earth One’s strengths, benefiting from a stronger publishing commitment by DC Comics and reaching heights that Earth One was capable of attaining.
