As a lifelong Superman fan who’s been through more iterations of the Man of Steel than I can count, I must say that the news about the upcoming James Gunn-directed movie has me absolutely giddy with excitement! The star-studded cast, the fresh take on the story, and the inspiration drawn from one of my all-time favorite comic book series, “All-Star Superman,” are enough to make any fan’s heart race faster than a speeding bullet.
The marketing campaign for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film is now taking flight! On Monday, Warner Bros. unveiled the initial teaser poster for this movie, marking the start of the new DC Universe under the guidance of Gunn and co-producer Peter Safran, as part of their DC Studios. Journalists were given a sneak peek of the Superman trailer on Warner’s Burbank lot earlier this week. Although the full footage won’t be available to the public until December 19th (which coincides with Superman’s appearance in episode 4 of the Max series Creature Commandos), eager fans can catch a glimpse of the DCU movie through the newly-released poster shown below.
In this fresh take on the Superman story, David Corenswet from “Twisters” steps into the role of the Man of Steel. Rachel Brosnahan, known for her work in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” portrays Lois Lane, a fearless journalist. Nicholas Hoult, who played the title character in “Nosferatu,” takes on the villainous Lex Luthor. Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell join the cast as Pa and Ma Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, while Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, Christopher McDonald, and Wendell Pierce are part of the team at “The Daily Planet” where Clark Kent works alongside them.
Alongside Edi Gathegi playing Mister Terrific in “For All Mankind”, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner Green Lantern in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, Isabela Merced portraying Hawkgirl, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, the cast for “Superman” includes María Gabriela de Faría (from “Deadly Class”) as Angela Spica/The Engineer of The Authority and Frank Grillo reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr. from James Gunn’s “Creature Commandos”, which is also featured in the upcoming season 2 of “Peacemaker”.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited about the upcoming reboot titled “Superman: Legacy.” From what I gather, this film will delve into Superman’s personal journey as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas. He’s grappling with his Kryptonian roots while embracing his human upbringing. The storyline seems to portray him as the embodiment of truth, justice, and the quintessential American spirit, all grounded by human compassion in a world that often views kindness as outdated.
In my perspective, the narrative crafted by Gunn in the new DC Universe isn’t about origins. Instead, we aim to move beyond the typical good versus evil scenario. Our tales will feature characters who are almost saintly, with Superman being one of them. Conversely, there will be truly wicked villains like Gorilla Grodd and the Joker. The majority of characters fall somewhere in between, offering a rich spectrum of gray that enables us to weave intricate and nuanced stories.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve noticed that the early days of Superman often get retold in a fresher, more youthful way. John Byrne’s groundbreaking 1986 story “Superman: The Man of Steel” and more recent takes like “Superman: Birthright” from 2004 and “Superman: Secret Origin” from 2009 are great examples. However, we haven’t seen that in “Superman: Year One,” another origin tale aimed at a younger audience (just yet).
In my perspective, I find myself greatly inspired by the 12-part comic series “All-Star Superman,” crafted by the brilliant writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. This work offers a timeless interpretation of the Superman mythos, featuring iconic characters such as Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White from The Daily Planet, Ma and Pa Kent, Krypto the Superdog, the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, alongside the villain Sun-Solaris.
DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters July 11, 2025.
