The first trailer for the new Supergirl movie is here, giving fans a great preview of the upcoming DC Universe film. Ever since Milly Alcock’s character, Kara Zor-El, unexpectedly showed up at Superman’s Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog, Krypto, people have been eagerly awaiting her own story. Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) and written by Ana Nogueira (who’s also working on the Wonder Woman reboot), the movie is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and the trailer suggests it will closely follow the original story.
I was excited by the first little sneak peek of Supergirl, but DC just dropped a full trailer and wow, it looks amazing! You absolutely have to check out the full Supergirl trailer below – I’m seriously hyped now!
The trailer reveals a complex story. The main focus seems to be Kara helping Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl living in a trailer, fight the film’s villains: Krem of the Yellow Hills and the dangerous space pirates known as the Brigands. We also see Krypto getting poisoned – hopefully that doesn’t happen! – and a brief appearance by David Corenswet as Superman, plus more of Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Along with the trailer, DC released a new movie poster featuring a clear look at Alcock in her costume, which you can check out below.

The Supergirl Trailer Is Great: What It Reveals About The Movie
The movie Supergirl takes place after Superman but before its sequel, Man of Tomorrow. While it’s been a while since Kara visited Earth and her cousin Clark, the film explains her brief appearance in Man of Tomorrow. Both movies show Kara drinking heavily, which seems to be how she deals with the loss of her home and her pet, Krypto – themes the trailer hints at being central to the story.
The trailer for Supergirl adds to the emotional stakes by showing Krypto poisoned with an arrow. There’s a race against time – only three days – to find an antidote and save him. This sets the main story in motion, with Kara teaming up with Ruthye, who is seeking revenge on Krem for her father’s death. Adding to the mix is Lobo, a tough, biker-style bounty hunter brought to life by Jason Momoa – a role many fans have hoped to see him play. Though Lobo isn’t a character from the comics, he appears to be a welcome addition as the heroes battle Krem and his gang, the Brigands.
Krypto getting poisoned isn’t just a plot point for the movie—it’s what will drive the story’s heart. He’s Supergirl’s best friend and the one she considers family, and the thought of losing him is truly upsetting (though it’s unlikely they’d actually kill him!). This event gives Supergirl a strong reason to act, and it opens the door for sweet flashback scenes of Krypto as a puppy. After everything he went through—being attacked by the Engineer and captured by Lex Luthor in the previous Superman movie—doesn’t he deserve a break?
The trailer is fantastic! It skillfully introduces the story, its central ideas, and what’s at risk for the characters, all without revealing too much. It perfectly blends the serious struggles Kara faces with the excitement of a space adventure, offering humor, snappy conversations, and impressive action sequences – including a glimpse of Kara’s heat vision – that really capture the spirit of Guardians of the Galaxy. The costume looks great, and Alcock seems ideally cast in the role.
Superman’s appearance in Supergirl successfully connects it to the larger DC Universe, but it’s likely David Corenswet’s role as Superman will be limited. Based on the trailer, it seems he’ll appear briefly at the beginning and end of the film, acting as a framing device. This would be ideal, as Supergirl is a compelling character capable of leading her own story, and the trailer suggests this movie could be just as good as, or even surpass, Superman.
Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26th, 2026.
