In an exciting development for DC Universe fans like myself, a fresh theory is circulating about the upcoming “Lanterns” series on HBO Max in early 2026 – a potential precursor to one of DC’s most iconic comic book events! As the third TV show premiering as part of the revamped DCU, “Lanterns” promises to be a thrilling ride.
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are set to bring Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two legendary Green Lanterns from the DC Comics universe, to life on screen. However, there’s speculation that they may not stand alone – other notable characters could join them!
Nathan Fillion is set to play Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern in “Lanterns” after making his debut in 2025’s “Superman.” However, an intriguing idea posted on Reddit suggests that Alan Scott, the first-ever Green Lantern, might also appear in the series. The theory proposes that Jordan and Stewart could travel to Earth to investigate Alan Scott’s death at the hands of a long-standing enemy of the Green Lantern Corps, the Black Hand. This could potentially lead to a live-action adaptation of “Blackest Night” within the DC Universe.

Alan Scott made his debut as a cosmic superhero within the pages of All-American Comics #16 in 1940. Instead of obtaining his powers from the Guardians of the Universe, it was the Starheart – a magical entity once controlled by the Guardians – that granted him these abilities. In 1939, following its rescue from a train accident, Scott fashioned the Starheart into a ring and thus became the initial Green Lantern. Since then, he has experienced death and resurrection multiple times within DC Comics, making his story an intriguing foundation for the Earth-bound investigation plotline in “Lanterns.
The concept that the Black Hand was responsible for Alan Scott’s death fits perfectly within the context of the Lanterns series. Known as one of Green Lantern’s main adversaries in DC Comics, the Black Hand gains strength each time he confronts the Green Lantern, by harnessing the energy from the hero’s power ring. Introducing the Black Hand as a villain in the Lanterns series would add an ominous and chilling element to the already dark and gritty storyline. This series, reminiscent of True Detective, is intended to be an investigative drama, where Hal Jordan and John Stewart work tirelessly to uncover the truth behind Scott’s death.
Significantly, the introduction of the Black Hand in the comic series “Lanterns” might signal a significant future development for the DCU, as the character plays a pivotal role in triggering the “Blackest Night” event by DC Comics. The “Blackest Night” saga unfolded across various titles from June 2009 to May 2010 and was marked by the resurrection of numerous deceased heroes who became supervillains, powered by the Black Lantern Corps’ rings. It may be a while before live-action DCU delves into “Blackest Night” directly, but the “Lanterns” series could offer the first hint at this grand storyline.
