Comics used to have very long runs, with series continuing for hundreds of issues. For example, the original Action Comics series lasted over 900 issues before starting over with a new #1. Until the 1990s, almost any character could have a long-running comic – Lois Lane’s series ran for 137 issues, and Sgt. Rock had 422! Today, it’s unusual for comics featuring less popular characters to reach those numbers, and even major heroes like Batman frequently relaunch their series with new #1 issues every few years.
It’s tough for comic books to stay popular for very long these days. That’s why it’s so remarkable that DC’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest just reached its 50th issue! What makes this series special is that it doesn’t follow the main DC storyline. Instead, it tells exciting and unique adventures of Batman, Superman, and Robin, set in the recent past of the DC universe. This latest issue shows us that we need more comics like World’s Finest.
Superman, Batman, and Infinite Potential

This landmark 50th issue celebrated how far our heroes have come. Superman and Batman chase Dr. Destiny into the Dreamstone after he uses a spell to keep everyone in the world awake for five straight days. Because the rest of the League was off-planet, they weren’t affected and were the only ones who could stop him. Zatana magically transported Superman and Batman inside the Dreamstone, where they suddenly found themselves in a version of the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV show, but styled after Superman.
Traveling through a landscape built from their shared experiences within the series, they encountered bizarre sights like the Doom Patrol and a statue of the Devil Nezha, all while being stalked by visions of Boy Thunder. As they journeyed, old resentments surfaced, driving a wedge between the two friends. They began to fight, nearly destroying their friendship, until they discovered Dr. Destiny was controlling them. Realizing the manipulation, the heroes turned the tables, defeating the villain by unleashing their own nightmares and proving why they’re known as the World’s Finest.
The Freedom to Be Anything

What makes this series work so well isn’t just the presence of Batman and Superman, but its creative freedom. Set during the early years of both heroes – almost like it’s from DC’s Silver Age – it embraces a style where anything can happen, with self-contained adventures. Because the established timeline is flexible during this period, the writers have a lot of room to experiment. As long as they avoid permanently killing characters, it’s a playground where they can explore simple, classic versions of DC’s heroes.
This series is exactly what DC Comics needs more of. Comics can be intimidating for new readers, but this one is instantly accessible and enjoyable. It’s a great way to meet these characters in their most basic, classic form, without getting bogged down in complicated backstories. Plus, it fills a gap in the market – while many appreciate the older ‘Silver Age’ comics, they often feel outdated and don’t quite fit with how comics are made today.
This series brilliantly revisits the classic elements that made older comics so appealing, updating them for modern readers. Because the histories of many iconic DC characters – Wonder Woman and the Flash, for example – are rooted in this era, similar series could remind us what we love about them. It’s a fantastic opportunity for writers to experiment and have fun without being constrained by existing storylines, but also without the need to create entirely new universes like some other books. It offers the ideal balance: creative freedom combined with a familiar foundation, making for a really enjoyable experience.
