DC’s Most Powerful Green Lantern Got the Most Terrifying Upgrade

A top-tier Green Lantern just received a significant power boost, which is sure to send shockwaves through the DC Universe. With the Omega Tournament finished and Darkseid temporarily defeated, the Green Lantern Corps faces a new challenge. They’re now juggling a larger, more complex organization while also dealing with urgent problems, such as the disappearance of powerful entities connected to the Emotional Spectrum.

During the recent fight between the Green Lanterns and the Starbreaker Corps, powerful beings known as the Entities were reintroduced after their seven original forms were destroyed. Now, these Entities have been reborn as infants, including Ion and Predator. Even Parallax, the entity famous for corrupting Hal Jordan, has returned. This poses a serious threat to one Green Lantern in particular, who is about to fall under Parallax’s influence. These events began after Guy Gardner was exposed to a massive amount of Alpha energy at the end of DC K.O., causing him to have visions of the Entities.

John Stewart is the Latest Green Lantern to Be Possessed by Parallax

Following the events of the Omega Tournament in Green Lantern Corps #14 (written by Morgan Hampton, with art by Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto, and lettering by Dave Sharpe), Guy Gardner is still haunted by visions of powerful beings. These entities are now being worshipped by Green Lanterns of all different types. Jessica Cruz, the leader of the Corps, asks Guy to investigate the source of his visions and locate the true entities before someone exploits their weakened, reborn forms. But the real threat isn’t who might take advantage of them—it’s the entities themselves.

For example, John and his partner, Katma Tui, unexpectedly encounter someone from their past. They’ve been trying to rebuild their relationship on Oa, but Katma—who is similar to the Katma John once lost—asked to visit Korugar, her home world, to gain some perspective. While exploring Korugar City, they attend a street fight where John is surprised to see Soranik Natu, a former Green Lantern colleague, competing.

John detects an energy pattern from Soranik that matches Parallax, but before he can react, Soranik challenges him to a fight. Parallax then bursts out of Soranik, declaring its intention to remain and sow fear across the galaxy. To protect Soranik, John volunteers to become Parallax’s new host, an offer the entity eagerly accepts. Parallax transfers from Soranik into John, thrilled by the abundance of fear and sadness within him, causing John to radiate Parallax’s characteristic yellow glow.

Green Lanterns and Parallax are a Recipe for Disaster

John isn’t the first Green Lantern to be influenced by the terrifying Parallax. Hal Jordan was once infected and caused immense destruction, even dismantling the entire Green Lantern Corps and trying to reshape the DC Universe. Kyle Rayner also fell under Parallax’s control during the ‘Sinestro Corps War,’ which led him to act out of character, though not on the same scale. What makes John’s situation unique is that he willingly allowed Parallax to enter him and actively chose to become its host.

Fortunately, John doesn’t have the incredible power boost he received a few years ago from the Godstorm. Still, he’s an exceptionally skilled and powerful Lantern, even more so than Hal or Kyle were when Parallax first controlled them. This means if Parallax tries to manipulate John into doing something terrible, the consequences could be devastating for the entire universe.

It’s admirable that John wants to save Soranik, and he’s right that fear is a natural part of existence. However, offering to become a host for the entity that corrupted his friend and led to the downfall of the Green Lanterns seems like a risky move. While John is strong-willed and likely capable of containing Parallax, even a moment of weakness could unleash unimaginable chaos while Parallax is connected to him.
