DC’s New Batman Movie Rewrites Joker’s Origin (& It’s Unlike Anything You’ve Ever Seen)

In the upcoming animated film titled “Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires“, we find a fresh, captivating spin on the classic storyline, with the portrayal of the Joker standing out as remarkably original. Unlike traditional tales that revolve around Bruce Wayne and Gotham City, this version reimagines Batman as an Aztec warrior. The protagonist is on a mission to avenge his city’s destruction by Spanish conquistadors and the murder of his father. Raymond Cruz portrays Yoka, the equivalent of the Joker in this universe, who initially appears as a high-ranking Aztec priest. Cruz and other cast members shared insights about their intriguing roles at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, prior to the film’s premiere on September 18th on HBO Max.

According to Cruz, the character doesn’t initially resemble the Joker. Instead, specific circumstances shape him mentally and emotionally, leading him to become who he is. Additionally, dwelling within Aztec rituals and beliefs, such as human sacrifice, greatly influenced his mindset.

Cruz noted that in this tale, Yoka serves as an apt counterpart to Batman since they initially belonged to the Aztec priesthood and their backstories commence with the conquest by the Spaniards. He found it intriguing how this aligned well with actual history regarding Spanish colonialism.

He stated, “The Aztec tale involving the arrival of the Spanish Empire is filled with sorrow. Upon their arrival and their desire to seize gold and plunder the empire, these events certainly contribute to a tragic narrative. The protagonist, initially a prominent figure as a high priest and advisor to Montezuma, experiences a downfall and must confront its consequences.

In this film, Horacio García Rojas portrays Batman as Yohualli Coatl, a character who enjoys a lavish upbringing among Aztec nobility until the arrival of the conquistadors. Interestingly, Hernán Cortés, played by Álvaro Morte, is the one who slays Batman’s father, transforming into the film’s depiction of Two-Face. Writer-director Juan Meza-Leon emphasized that these roles were not arbitrarily assigned to historical figures; instead, they were meticulously selected to effectively tell the story being told.

He explained this tale revolves around two significant characters, people who face a terrible event. Each character chooses between two paths: ‘I will do everything within my ability to prevent anyone else from suffering,’ or ‘I will do whatever I can to make others suffer as I am.’

The animated series titled “Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires” is a joint production between Warner Bros. Animation and Mexican animation studio Ánima Estudios. In Mexico, this series will hit the big screen, while in the United States, it will debut on HBO Max streaming platform starting September 18th.
