DC’s New Green Lantern Show Borrows The Last Part Of The Arrowverse You’d Expect

The new DC show, Lanterns, is taking a page from the Arrowverse playbook in a surprising move. Despite being a popular comic book group, the Green Lanterns haven’t had many chances to shine on screen, leaving fans wanting more appearances of this fascinating DC faction.

The DC Universe is starting to evolve its timeline, as seen with Green Lantern Guy Gardner appearing in both Superman and season 2 of Peacemaker. A new Green Lanterns show is also on the way, aiming to launch a fresh era for DC’s movies and TV shows. Interestingly, this new series is already using a technique that was popular in the earlier Arrowverse shows.

The DCU’s New Green Lantern Show Borrows A Naming Trend Introduced By The Arrowverse

A Green Lantern series is coming to the DC Universe in 2026, focusing on the established hero Hal Jordan and newcomer John Stewart, with Jordan taking on a mentorship role. The show will explore the history and mythology of the Green Lanterns, but it will be titled simply ‘Lanterns,’ omitting the ‘Green’ from the official faction name.

Interestingly, removing ‘Green’ from the title follows a pattern seen in DC’s live-action history. The show that launched the Arrowverse, originally focused on Green Arrow, was simply titled ‘Arrow.’ While the new DC Universe and the Arrowverse are distinct, it’s a neat parallel to see the DC Universe use the same naming approach, and it appears both changes were made for similar reasons.

Why The DCU’s Green Lantern Show Is Called Lanterns

As the Arrowverse expanded and introduced more fantastical elements from DC Comics, Arrow initially aimed for a realistic and gritty portrayal of Green Arrow’s story. The show’s title change seems to support this, with “Arrow” sounding more serious and subdued than “Green Arrow.”

It looks like the show Lanterns is sticking to similar naming practices as other DC projects. While the DC Universe is open to exploring fantastical elements from the comics, Lanterns seems to be a more mature and realistic take on these heroes. This is especially clear from Nathan Fillion’s comment that he swore more on the first day of filming Lanterns than he had in his entire career, which suggests a grittier tone that fits the show’s name.

The new series Lanterns might have a shorter title to distance itself from the poorly received 2011 Green Lantern movie. It seems DC is repeating a strategy first used by the Arrow series over a decade ago, and there’s likely more to this decision than just the title.
