It seems Zack Snyder is hoping to revive his vision for the DC Universe, often referred to as the ‘Snyderverse.’ He frequently uses social media to hint at this possibility, sometimes with messages that feel pointed towards Warner Bros. It’s clear he wants the studio to continue the story he started, and reconnect with his dedicated fanbase, but likely not in the exact way his most enthusiastic supporters are hoping for.
Okay, so everyone’s wondering if Zack Snyder will actually get what he wants? Yeah, it’s possible. But will it mean the old DCEU universe, the one that’s basically finished, suddenly comes back to life? Honestly, that’s almost definitely not happening. Like, super unlikely. It’s about as close to a flat-out ‘no’ as you can get without completely shutting the door.
“Never say never.”
Let’s quickly address a rumor. Netflix isn’t planning to remove James Gunn and Peter Safran from their positions. They’ve clearly stated they’re committed to their current plans and are reportedly fully supporting the continuation of the DC Universe vision.
Here’s a look at upcoming DC events, including the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a follow-up to the 2025 film Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Other projects include the Lanterns series and a Clayface movie. James Gunn is also leading the development of the Elseworlds universe, where Matt Reeves is continuing work on The Batman Part II and other projects are in the works.
While the previous DC cinematic universe is clearly finished, it’s time for the studio to concentrate on the promising new direction they have available now, rather than trying to revive what’s already done.
An Animated Snyderverse Is the Answer
Choosing that particular image really makes me wonder what a Justice League continuation in Zack Snyder’s style would be like. It seems like the only option, especially since Netflix isn’t interested in continuing Zack Snyder’s DC Universe as a live-action series – and honestly, it’s unlikely that will ever happen.
DC Comics has long been a strong presence in animation, often considered ahead of Marvel in that space. Now, with a fresh start on HBO Max, Zack Snyder has the potential to create something truly special using comics, graphic novels, and animated series. However, the previous DC Universe (DCEU) is finished. James Gunn has already recruited Jason Momoa (who will play Lobo) for his new DC Universe, and Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck have moved on to other projects. Ezra Miller and Amber Heard continue to face public controversies, and Henry Cavill is reportedly unwilling to work with Warner Bros. again after his previous experience. Essentially, the old DCEU is over and a new era is beginning.
Perhaps it’s time to support the DC Universe fans want and allow Zack Snyder to continue his vision without creating conflict with James Gunn. Fans would appreciate having both creative voices contribute – they deserve to see everything both filmmakers have to offer.
